First doe, super humbling

Post by RonnieM »

Went out this afternoon hunting. Saw a few down wind that smelled me and jetted. Then I ended up having some on the other side up wind come in. They were about 20 yards. They were in high soy beans, branches, but I thought I had or made a good shot. I was like I'm gonna get a smaller one for some good tender meat. Made the shot, they all ran, I never took my eyes off her and she just stood there. I was like how could I have missed. Finally she went down. I jumped down took off then the other deer blew at me and finally took off. Couldn't find any blood or the deer. I thought I missed and she just maybe went down a dip and it looked like she went down. I looked and looked in them soy beans just in case. I found her still alive. Guys that hit me hard. I hate to not make a humane kill. I jumped down and cut her throat fast as I could. Man did that bother me. Have no clue how I was off shooting. Maybe shooting her in tall soy beans but my shoot was back too far. Anyways, it sucked. Talked to God about it. Just hate seeing an animal not die fast. The meat is all used for the family. Plus it's freaking still warm so I have to rush through everything. Think I'm gonna wait for it to cool down more then finish stocking our freezer. Oh yea, gonna practice shooting more, I was just off.

Kudoo's for seeking a clean kill next time. Don,t let it shake you when you are aiming to kill another one. Your practice will confirm confidence in your equipment and your range with it. Pick and choose you shots and back to it..
A somber congrats on recovering your first doe. More for caring about your shot.

That sucks Ronnie but unfortunately it can happen to anyone. That darn Murphy. :x Well, you've got a great attitude about it so hang in there. As careful as you were before, this will make you even more apt to make the perfect shot every time. Congrats still.

Thanks for the input folks. Thought and thought about my shoot. The height was spot on where I wanted it, it just hit further back then I was thinking I was aiming. Maybe because if the beans so high on her or or or. Thing is I will do my best for that to never happen. On another note, another beautiful arrow from big john gone. That stinks. Going to have to have more arrows made and I'm thinking Flemish string. Got a new reinhart 18-1 I'm gonna carve into today. Good hunting folks and super fast kills

Congrats on the deer but sorry it happened that way. Sooner or later we all get a bad hit for whatever the reason, it's just part of hunting. Don't let it get to you, and good luck next time out.

That sucks and I know the feeling in a round about way - I may be getting old but I shot a fawn 3 years ago and it was a quick bleed out but the fawn had been shot during muzzle season and her leg was a mess. That hit me very hard as well and still does when my mind wanders - My game plan since is that yearlings pass go and collect $200.

I have also made bad shots and never recovered the animal which weighs heavy on me as well.

Cheers,

Congrats on your kill. Sometimes it just happens, but remember, your always helping to keep the herd heathy and fed by taking a deer no matter how it happens. And you have some nice meals ahead of you. Go get another! And have fun.

Congrats Ronnie.

A "bad hit" can happen to anyone for any endless amt of reasons. Don't let it keep ya out of the woods. Even though a bad hot can happen to anyone, it's what you do after it that determines the quality of a hunter (IMHO) and you done good
