I just got invited to hunt this new piece of property that one of my friend's Dad owns yesterday. Well my friend just got into bow hunting and put up a stand in the woods behind his house. He has a 90yrd by 15yrd clearing in the middle of the woods that sits between a strawberry field and bean field. Well we put out trail cams but have not checked them yet. We also have corn out and noticed something was eating the corn at a high rate. So instead of checking the cams 1st, I went out yest morn to sit and see for myself. Upon arriving to the tree stand I notice something laying in the grass eating my corn. I can't make out what it is so I get closer thinking this is either a large pig or dog. I sit and wait until daylight and then get a better look. I notice its head pop up and I see its triangle ears and then it clicks. The bear then stands up to stretch and my heart starts beating out of my chest. I'm only 20 yrds away and know that I need to back out slowly. My worry then turned to "if there's 1, there's another so I get out of there quickly and quietly. Lesson for the day: Check your damn trail cams before entering new areas! And bring a back up weapon!

...Some young kid was mauled to death in Jersey a couple of weeks ago when he and his friends came up Yogi and they tried to run in fear....Well Yogi picked the slowest and meatiest (that would have been me) and mauled him!

NJ only allows something like 3/4oz or 1 1/2 oz of pepper spray. Basically enough to spray in your own eyes so you don't see the bear eating you! With black bears its a big intimidation game, if you appear bigger or more aggressive they retreat every time. Its the ones that stand their ground that you have to back away from.

Your the one with a bow, What's to worry about?? Bear attacks don't happen
all that much. The bad part is yes bear can kill a person in a heart beat.. I've bow hunted black bear and brownies during the past 30yrs yea I had some close calls
but those keep your blood pumping.. lol Get your butt back up in your treestand
and enjoy wildlife ...If your that scared maybe you shoukd
forget bow hunting ... lol come on

I killed one in the N.C. mountains a couple of years ago but what I found out is they normally stay shy of people except when food and their cubs are around. I hunted one area that had about 10 different bears in that area according to trail cam pics and they would always run away if I saw them in the woods.

I would go back hunting but just be careful and a little more alert, once bears smell you they usually stay away from that area for awhile so I wouldn't worry too much about them
