Just Couldn't Do It...What Would You Do?

Post by nchunterkw »

My last 2 sits at the organics farm have had the same results. I very young fawn - still with spots - comes into the field around 6:15 PM and feeds for awhile and then leaves. Last night it was within 15yards with no clue I even existed. And even though I am hunting mostly to help feed the needy, I just couldn't pull the trigger. What would you do in my situation?

Let it go, it will grow... (unless it is the last day of the late season and there is only 15 minutes left to hunt and you haven't filled your tags. In that case if it's brown it's down!)

That was the plan.....except I think I shot Momma already opening week. It was in the field for over 30 minutes last night but nothing else came out. A couple of times it kept looking back in the woods, but nothing. That is one upside of a live decoy......they can see and hear WAYYYY better than me.

You've done the right thing give it a year or two and it will be plenty big enough for some table fare. I feed my family with usually all does unless my wife kills a young buck, It took years to get to where I'm at now but I let a lot of small bucks walk each year and its made a big difference being able to sit in the woods and have a chance at a good buck.

Its still early in the season they'll be some bigger deer come along soon.

I don't even shoot momma when she is with fawns with spots. Once the fawns get 50-60 lbs big,,then momma is a go for me as I know the young will survive on their own. I don't waste a tag on a small yearing either. too many other deer to shoot at and tag. I don't have a problem filling the freezer so I am picky.
