Shoot more does and let that little guy grow up, then you'll have a nice deer.

that's about as big as they get in south bama.....because we have too many.
one thing in these parts, you don't shoot all your resident does...you will be slapping yourself in the face. territories are different.
we have to select our does because some are still nursing there young this
time of year.
I know that 2 of the does in that pic are still with there babies.
we watch them closely.

Not as bad here in Ohio. Usually most fawns are big enough to survive if their mama is killed by the time season opens. I much prefer to try to pick out 1½ year old does for meat, though. As for bucks, I'll shoot about anything I get a good shot at, even though we are allowed only one buck per year (regardless of how it's harvested - bow, gun, or muzzleloader).
I have noticed the deer population is down in the area I hunt due (I believe) to an outbreak of EHD a couple years ago. Last year I only took one doe (and will probably do the same this year) to let the herd have a chance to increase a little. So far this year it looks like the does and bucks are at about even numbers at my feeder site, but that doesn't take into account the fawns as far as sex.

Not pointing fingers here so don't get me wrong: When I started deer hunting here in Arkansas in 1982 it was bucks only, and nobody ever laid eyes on anything bigger than in your pics. Most bucks taken were, button bucks, spikes and forkies. All the old timers would lament that "there ain't no big bucks around here anymore"! The whole time the truth was that they were shooting 98% of those bucks before they ever saw their 2nd or 3rd season, and the latter was not the norm.

For a darn good while now the AGFC has come up with much more sensible regs with point restrictions and a slowly growing doe opportunities for gun hunters, the ones who have the biggest impact on the deer herd. The results? I hunt public land right across the river from the capitol city of our state, and our sister city on the north side of the river BORDERS it.... It's HAMMERED! Still, in the last 8-9 years I've laid eyes on as many true wallhangers from 135 or so all way to 190-200!!!!! This state ain't unique or special, all it takes is getting the average deer hunter to change their "if I don't shoot him somebody else will" thinking and open their minds a little and pass up on those 1-2 year old bucks and shoot LOTS more does, and in not a very long time, that state will also have similar results. Alas, most hunters won't do this on their own, so the state game agencies have to do it for them. Problem is, if all the gun hunters are pissin' and moanin' about "not gettin' my buck", said state agencies have to buck the populace up front just to help them all out down the road. Many don't have the political kojones to do that!

In the immortal words of Albert Einstein: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" !!!

See if this opens y'all. i got this video last year in early mid October. Bill Winke agreed with my belief that this buck is probably 3.5 years old and around 130". This is NOT a rarity around here anymore, but would be 25 years ago when does were sacred and everything with bone on it's head was blasted as soon as someone laid eyes on it!!!!

lake shooter, that's all good when you have bucks that can get that big !!!
its not that everyone here shoots everything that moves....
I manage 2500 acre of my private farm land and no outsiders are allowed.
its just we have so many bucks and x2 more does.
my family has 7 hunters that maintain this area and there is bird sanctuary
that borders the property on 3 sides. so, its kinda locked in.
we are in the deep south of bama and nowhere local do you find 150lb bucks.
even in club lands a management areas. it is what it is....its not
because we shoot anything that moves. we take doe's regularly when
its positive there not nursing there young.

"When you have bucks that can get that big"???????? 8)

Say what friend? Not trying to yank your chain here, but honestly, that makes no sense and sounds like the kind of stuff that used to be spouted around here! IF they get older than 3.5, you WILL see some darn nice bucks on the hoof, regardless of "Nutrition and genetics".

The area where I hunt has ZERO farm crops, acid rocky soil and also ZERO food plots and such. These are plain Jane, hard scrabble (literally), working class, wild deer. Last but not least, they are HARD hunted, and our bow season goes from Sept 27th to Feb 28th!!!

Have you ever had someone in the know come in and age the bucks y'all were taking by using the jaws? Opinions on how old this or that buck might be are like opinions about anything else: not always backed by the facts or rational thinking. The teeth don't lie!

Please note that nowhere in all of this have I questioned your abilities as a deer hunter. I mean no offense at any of this pal and hope that you don't take it that way, it ain't personal. Only puttin' facts out there.

well I can put this fact out here.....your not in deep south Alabama and you have no clue on managing this part of the U.S.
i appreciate your knowledge and opinion. but it don't work here.
i'm not mid-state or even 3/4 down, i can throw a stick at the gulf of mexico
from my southern most property.
and as far as you yank'n my chain......its been rusted apart for many years,
so yank on dude......
