Quality Issues Waiting to Happen...

Post by Drew »

So I was at Gander Mountain today (Novi, MI), and every single Excalibur they had (6) had the brace height about 1/4" INFRONT of the rail to riser joint. The string on the M380 they had was buried in the bumpers. I had the guy behind the counter hand me one and explained to him the issue and mentioned he should have all of them pulled down and properly adjusted. Not sure if he will or not.

I hope Excal is doing something about this as once a reputation gets tarnished it takes a long time and a lot of advertising to change peoples minds on something. I work for one of the big three automakers as a product development engineer and probably half of my time is either quality issue prevention or issue containment. And regardless of all the recalls you hear about, almost NONE never make it to the customers. Especially when you consider how many vehicles are produced each year.

Hopefully this gets sorted out as I'd like to see Excal stay in business for a long time with a sterling reputation as the best crossbows made.

Just my thoughts...

my son has a friend that is the assistant manager at our local BassPro
and he says that the Excalibur crossbows are sent to them un-strung...
and they have them on display un-strung.
if some shops display them stringed, then its there problem not
Excalibur's.

I noticed this problem from a previous post but have not heard back from my
contact until this morning.

the selling shop must read/follow the instructions to assemble correctly if not,
it falls back on them I would think.

some higher horsepower here needs to report about this.

thanks..........

Most of the big box stores have employees assemble the Excaliburs crossbows who have very little knowledge of them. The problem of the string being too loose is a very real problem because if a customer puts that much money down they expect/demand a high quality product and when they have problems this will turn them against Excal. Also most all of them purchase the CB without a stringing aid and don't even know that they need one. JMHO

This problem has been brought to Excalibur's attention a while ago and I imagine they are in the process of rectifying it.

The exo series bows came that way, but I thought the matrix line came pre-strung from the factory

The M355 matrix I bought at Dunhams 2 weeks ago came strung in the box and after I got it home and assembled it and saw the brace Height I researched, bought a string changing rope and adjusted it where it should have been. Not a good thing as most people wouldn't question this likely.

before I bought my first excal I was all over the internet looking for information about the recurves ..the thing that sold me was I didn't need a press to change the string and even though I had one I was loved this fact.. so I never even questioned ..should I have a stringer or not ..I knew I had to have it.
Im saying this because I cant understand why anyone who buys this type of bow doesn't get the stringer also. its a no brainer.or at least it should be

I absolutely agree. The problem is that the shops need to sell them. Not everyone will read and research so they won't have a clue they need a stringing aid. I've told my local shop and a local Wholesale Sports that they shouldn't let people leave without a stringing aid but they're completely uninterested. I say include them in a kit with a current and thorough instructional DVD.

All the bows leave Excalibur strung .
All strings stretch . People who have been in the game long enough got to remember the Dacron stretch . It seemed to be never ending .
I should have added all bows leave strung short of brace height to anticipate some stretching .

Exactly they can be strung at factory with correct brace height and upon purchase string has stretched.

But retailers should be advising customers to check and adjust prior to shooting.
If I were an Excal dealer every bow would leave ready to shoot and cust advised to monitor and adjust as needed until it settles.

I don't know if excalibur management ever reads these forums but if so I have a suggestion that might help.
Brace height is far too important to leave to the instruction manual.
So to bring it to everyone's attention without a big fuss or cost, each string could have a fold over warning tag, like those sold with electric cords, that states the importance of this and how to achieve it. This would easily and cheaply protect both excalibur and their customers.

I thought this was the case. Thanks for clearing that up DoeMaster. I think Marketing dude even mentioned that during shipping the strings may stretch depending on weather, (heat etc).

Ultimately, its up to the consumer to read and know all the maintenance and care of the products that we use, we can point to excal all we like for the low brace height problems, but its the user who isn't doing their homework!!

I still think a stringing aid should be included in the kit so the consumer can maintain their bow properly. Clearly its a very important tool.
