I think you summed it up pretty well.

If you match your gear to your bow your chances of putting your game down quickly/humanely (provided you hit the vitals) go up drastically.

As I have said before, if you are "hitting" with close to 100 pounds of KE you can "chuck" whatever you want.

Where issues tend to arise, with vertical bows somewhat more than crossbows (but it still applies), if you are shooting a low poundage bow, with wicked light arrows AND a HUGE broadhead, your penetration might "suck" and if you take a low percentage shot (quartering towards), you are far more likely to wound, non-fatally (at least unrecoverable) than if you shot a heavier arrow with a more "reasonable" broadhead.

The "moral" of the story - shoot a 380/405 if you want an "anything goes" point and shoot set-up....

I had a high vital pass thru hit this past season almost level with the deer, double lung with a two blade rage xbow broadhead. Not the blood trail I have grown a customed to with these heads. Deer ran close to 60 to 80 yards in tall overgrown pasture grass. I believe if I was higher above the deer the exit would have been lower on the body resulting in a better blood trail. Body cavity was filled with blood when I started cleaning him out.

Totally agree. I would add that it isn't as much where you hit, as where you exit. When hunting from an elevated position, I find it best to aim for the exit. Sometimes your entrance will be rather high to get an exit behind the shoulder on the opposite side.

And under no circumstances should your exit be in the gut area. A great lethal shot will leave far less blood with an exit through the gut.

It all sums up to shot placement and Broad head, doesn't matter if your up a tree or in a ground blind. Sometimes things happen out of the blue, how ever the BH you pick can play a big part in your bad luck.
