I have always wanted to kill a buck on my birthday but have never had the chance. This morning in Western Pennsylvania was a beautiful morning but the deer movement didn't match my expectations.
After not seeing anything from daybreak till 930 I decided to move out the ridge a few hundred yards. Saw a fawn under the stand when I got there. Didn't see anything else till 12 when I saw a buck cruising along the ridge but out of range. Tried calling but he didn't respond. About an half hour later As I was eating a bag of Doritos I caught movement along the ridge. This buck came straight in to me and stopped broadside at 30 yards. The arrow found its mark and he piled up in a short distance.
First kill in a while where I wasn't in a hurry to get it out of the woods and it was nice to enjoy the moment.
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.
