Two down, good week for my son and I.

Post by hockeyfodder »

It was a productive week for my son and I.
Here in Ontario the number of antlerless tags in our area of the province and way down. A particularly tough winter and coyote predation have thinned out the herd.
We managed to harvest a huge doe in the rifle season but in the first muzzleloader season weather conditions were such that we didn't see anything. On Tuesday November 25th just after five it changed for my son.
He was sitting in an Ameristep blind set up at the edge of some standing corn.
He saw some movement in the dimming light conditions. He identified it as a big doe.
At 25 yards she turned and offered a broadside shot.
He sent a bolt through the shoothrough mesh and double lunged her.
Although she didn't go far it was quite a recovery.
Used a deer carrier to haul her through slash, a dry swail, a wet swail and topped it off by having to make our way through an 80 yard field of standing corn. At 61 and not used to this kind of physical activity I slept quite well that night.
Last night (November 29th) was my turn.
I was set up in a tent near an old overgrown orchard. At 5:02 a nice little freezer buck come poking through the slash toward my shooting lane.
When I moved to get the bow turned in the right direction something made a noise and got the buck's attention.
He watched for a few seconds and I thought he was going to turn and go back the way he came in.
He relaxed a bit and stepped out at 18 yards.
I sent a bolt into his chest and he took off at top speed.
Unfortunately he ran through the corner of the orchard and down a steep ridge into some slash. He kept going into a thick stand of cedars.
I had gathered up my equipment and taken it back to my truck and waited there for about 45 minutes. I got on his trail which was easy to follow in the snow due to the huge amount of blood.
I followed him through the slash and cedars for about 200 yards before I came to him.
He had fallen down at least 8 times, probably from blood loss.
It was about a 120 yard drag to the next road over.
Once at this road I was about 3/4 of a mile from my truck so I called my wife to pick me up and give me a ride back to my truck.
She gave me a hand loading it into the truck.
It was a young 7 pointer.
Don't know how to post pics, sorry.
Also sorry for being so long winded with this.

Congrats!! to you and your son... I'm 62 and understand how a long drag can be a pain,, Luck has been with me this year. The longest drag about 50 yards and my son a young stud sure helps..But in the end all is worth it.. FOOD..........

I tried to drag a large doe uphill after having quadruple bypass surgery and found that at this point I can no longer do so.
Thank the lord for having a young friend hunting with me that came and helped. :D

Congrats on both of your deer. :D

Glad ya got a couple! :D I use one of those duck decoy little plastic boats.I use it behind the 4 wheeler where I can.But usually use it by itself.Works great and slides on and over most stuff and small creeks and ditches you cross you don't need to worry about the water getting the deer soaked.
