Tree stand scare

Post by strum »

I had the scare of my life this evening coming out of the tree I hunted..
Heres what happened.
I did a quick scout this morning after my hunt and found some very very fresh rubs. So of course this is where I wanted to set up this eve..
this spot is fairly steep draw and has some Mt laurels toward the bottom.(where the rubs are) so I wanted to set up in a manner that I can watch the laurels and as much of the draw as possible..
could not find a good tree.. they are just all narley and twisted or too big so finally I choose one that would do.. using my viper I had to let the cables all the way out and do some finagleing to get around some of the knots ,burls.
once up I spotted a much better tree but since I was up I decided to hunt it and use the better one in the morn. hunted ..didn't see anything.. started down.
knowing it would be a task I took my time and was working my way down fine when I came to the worst burl.. I couldn't get the bottom part to go around the darn thing ..so im working it and working it when all of the sudden the cable turned loose!! never had a cable come out of a Summit ,but I was on the last cable stop and guess all the twising turning jerking and janking caused It to somehow let go. Now im in a pickle. I think my heart was coming out for a min I was so shaken. sorry for the long story but I need to tell it :D
I still had my harness connect so that was good .. I had to pull myself up so I could sit on the rail(with the bottom still on my feet . then I undid the seat and reconnected it to the tree.. was able to get my knees in the seat and pull the bottom up with the strap that keeps the sections attached, work the cable around the tree , back into the latch and breath
ill never try a tree like that again and im thinking if I had not had the cable all the way out this would not have happened..
any way, thanking the Lord for a safe trip to the ground!!!
all that sounds easy but you about have to be an acrobat to pull it off.
Im posting this in hopes of helping others. Be safe .. ok im done now

Glad you are ok, it appears you were very lucky. I always try to think up and down a tree as if your life depends on it. Your story is a good reminder.

Scary for sure. I am glad that it turned out ok.

My guess is that the cable wasn't seated properly.

I've heard of the bottom platform sliding it's way down the tree as you sit in the upper stand (thus the tether) but never a disconnect. You did everything else right and that's why there was no injury. Congrats!

If you're not part of the solution, you might be part of the problem.

Bob you may be right. first thing im going to do in the morning is check the mechanism,, that trigger lock spring thing may have gotten bent and was not holding pressure properly.

And that folks is why we wear a harness. Stuff happens. Having the proper safety gear just turns it into an exciting day in the field instead of a trip to the hospital or worse. Glad things turned out well.

I had some fall restraint equipment fail myself at 22 ft,, The fall didn't hurt the sudden stop does... Luckily I walked away with only shoulder surgery.. My suggestion get back in your climber and enjoy another day hunting
