Dec 31st hunt - One I will never forget as long as I live
Hello all,
Its kind of an informal custom for RJ and myself to get out for a hunt on the last day of the season with a number of other friends. This year was no different as RJ, myself, Wyllie and Russ got together for a final hunt. We started at RJ's farm and it was quite cold. I watched as the sun made its way up;
Once the sun came up there was no shortage of action around me. I glanced behind me at one point and seen 3 deer coming across the field trotting and slightly flagging. I checked the wind and knew it wasn't me causing the disturbance. As the deer crossed the field they came into my 40 yard zone but I couldn't get them to stop. I wasn't able to get any pics as I thought I might get a poke at one of them. I soon seen what had them on the defensive as a Yotey was on their trail. This was my view to the rear;
And, my view to the front;
Soon after I watched another 3 deer crossing the field in front of me and into RJ's bush;
After the morning stands we headed up to the Mt Forest area for breakfast.
This is the part that made the hair on the back of my head stand up~!
During breakfast I mentioned that I had lived and worked in Temagami (Northern Ontario). Wyllie asked me what years I was there and I told him from 1993 to 1998. Wyllie then told me that his accident was in Temagami. I recalled to him that the only serious accident I had attended while I was there was a tractor trailer hitting a van broadside killing one of the passengers and severely injured another. Wyllie's face lost expression and I know mine did when we realized that 20+ years ago him and I met under some tragic circumstances. We have seen each other off and on for 3 or so years now without ever making the connection. I couldn't believe it and have to wonder what the chances would have been. We needed a photo after we put the pieces together~!
After breakfast we headed to some local areas that RJ has permission on and did several pushes. The weather was a little bitter and raw but fun none the less.
Russ heading to a watch;
Wyllie setting up for a drive;
And another;
We headed back to RJ's for the final hunt of 2014. He sure has some nice setups on his farm;
Wyllie setting up for the final stand of 2014. RJ's thread about "things have changed" came to my mind although I have to wade through the threads I still pick up some good ideas on the forum and one of them is beside Wyllie. I purchased the "Buddy" heater for my ground blind when it becomes too cold to sit in a tree. I was taking a tree stand for my final hunt and told Wyllie to give it a try. It works great in a blind and makes little noise. It's great for me as I cant handle the cold like I could in my younger days.
Although we didn't harvest it is a hunt that I will remember as long as I am alive~!
Cheers,
Robin

Things in your story and not in your story....
Temagami 20 years ago. You're an EMT or Cop? Wyllie gets seriously hurt in an accident you attend. You didn't know him at the time and didn't know him when you met up again in S ON 16 or 17 years later and you've been hunting together the odd time since.........and this comes out now! That is a story you can't trump. I'll be telling you're story lol. God bless you guys...

Wow Sandman! your friend is an inspiration! My brother got paralyzed from his chest down the friday before mother's day last year, i've been trying to build a fire back in him and seeing your friend out there in the bush might be the ticket.
nothing but respect for him (brother) and your friend, or anyone that has a injury like that.

Great pictures Sandman !
Yep we saw lots of deer that day , unfortunately no clear shot opportunities ... but what a blast we had chasing them on that cold last day of the season !
And yep I was blown away when we found out that even though yours and Wylie's paths have crossed many times over the years hunting with me > you never put the details of that life changing event together until that conversation during breakfast at that country restaurant ! Small world man / Small world !
Yep Helmut > The stand that Sandman took the pictures from is the same one you have spent time in ... Always some sort of action I that stand .
I like the picture of the three deer going into the West end of the bush > Another 5 yards East in the frame and we would have been able to see the ladder for the stand that Russ was in that morning ...
Some of our best hunts don't always end in a kill !
It's great to get the camera out when possible to capture the memories of the day as well ...
Glad you got some pictures that day !

Great pictures Robin!
That's a day I will never forget! The chance of us meeting and figuring out that we had "met" almost twenty years ago. Amazing! Even as I type this I feel the chills and the hair on my neck standing up!
The day was amazing! The deer would have been a bonus but not sure I could have enjoyed it much more than I did.
Thanks for sharing the pictures!
Did we get a picture of you and I together?
Wylie
