stirrup mod. idea

Post by canoe13 »

I know many of us do not like the thrum that the stirrup makes when the bow is shot. Now I am not a sound engineer but I was wondering if a series of holes (3-5 on each side) were drilled into the stirrup if the the harmonic vibrations in the metal would be interrupted and silence the thrum. Much like when a bell is cracked and it can't ring properly. I would try it myself but my workshop is under a ton of snow right now.

A simple thing to cut down on stirrup noise is a piece of rubber between the stirrup and the bow . And either camo form on the stirrup or you could plastidip the stirrup as well .

Unintended consequences. What if it ends up sounding like a flute?

To improve and alter the resonance I machined the mounting back section of the stirrup flat so that I could use shorter lighter 1/4" screws. This gives additional contact between the stirrup and mainframe to improve/reduce the sound you speak of.

Next up for improvement I added a edge chamfer to the 4 edges.

Lastly, my stirrup looks like swiss cheese under the black applied undercoating for additional tonal improvement.

Hmmm... not that I have the tools or space to do so but how about drilling the holes and then pouring/injecting liquid rubber or silicone into the stirrup itself since its hollow already?

I thought they were solid but if they are hollow injecting silicone in them might be a good idea . Silicone does do wonders for some people of the feminine persuasion.

The stirrups are not hollow.

I copied off of Norm's stirrup. I rounded the edges on mine and drilled a bunch of holes 1/2 way through it and then dipped it in Plasti-dip. It changes the tone some, but I think what's more noticeable is the loss in weight off the front end of the bow.

Must be a high frequency sound.
I never hear it, but I'm essentially deaf to anything above about 8kHz.

Just wait a few years, then leave the hearing aids off when shooting, things are much quieter as I get older.

This is the stirrup on a Matrix 330 before I gave it a second coat of plasti-dip, (bad picture). I didn't flatten the back of the stirrup like Norm did.
