The long road to a turkey

Post by Doe Master »

We spent the first two weeks chasing the birds . They would be here and we would of course be there . :?
Opening day Dad/Old buck had a bird roosted 75 yards to his right goobling his brains out . Of course flew directly away because he didn`t seem to want female company . Dads seductive calling maybe sounded like a two pack a day lady at closing time . That bird came by me on my right through sticks and limbs . I was carrying the bow !!! He was easy shotgun shot .
The next two weeks were similar close calls .
Well the vacation was over and I had to go back to work building the Worlds best crossbows . :) I spent a lot of moments thinking how can we get this to work . Meanwhile Dad went home and was met with a list of jobs to do while he was away playing .
He was to get all the grass cut , rototill the garden , get flower gardens done .
Image
Cut and pile some of the wood . :)

Well he must of got some of the jobs done because he was given a weekend pass . Mom/Lady Di gave him permission to go again !!! :D
Yesterday was dead quiet . Even the crows were silent first thing in the morning . We relocated to another spot that had some gobbling first week . We walked in about 3/4 mile stopping here and there . Dads legs get tired . He is 76 years young running with me . :) We got to the stop and settled in . About 5-10 minutes later I gave my " I`m desperate and looking for company " calls . He answered right off . But once again I must of sounded like Joan Jett . He gobbled going away .
Fast forward to this morning . Dad made the trek into the point where we made contact the day before . Put my nephew just down the ridge from him about 150 yards and my brother covering the back side of the ridge . I went to the other side of a wet area from them . A little after legal we had three birds begin their yodeling session . One would set off the other two who would set him off . It was like rolling thunder going back and forth across the swamp . About 6:15 I had one come in to about 50 yards but was behind some nasty deadfall junk .
Image
He walked away when he lost interest . I proceeded to have a bird on my right side work his way all the way around me . This merry-go-round around the tree took 3 hours . He let me know where he was almost every 10-15 minutes .
Well after almost 4 hours on my butt . It was beyond sore . He came in one inch by agonizing inch . He FINALLY hit a shooting window . :D
I radioed my success and that I was walking out . We met at the trail junction .
Image
Time for pictures . I really love the digital cameras . No shortage of pictures .

Image
Picture of my nephew and Old Buck with me . :)
Image
We decided to get a group picture . Grandfather , sons and grandson . :D
Image
Got home and butchered up our harvest .

A celebration toast of Wild Turkey Bourbon .
Image
Fresh turkey breast for supper . :)

Going out tomorrow with just the camera with Dad . I have two more weekends . Take care everyone .
