A Small Step for Crossbowers In Indiana

Post by Woody Williams »

From this year's Indiana Administrative Rules process...

Crossbows are legal for Fall and Spring turkey season per:

(3) bow and arrow, including crossbows as defined in 312 lAC 9-3-4(j), with the following restrictions:
a) No person shall use a long bow or compound bow of less than thirty-five (35) pounds pull
b) Arrows must be equipped with metal or metal-edged (or flint, chert, or obsidian napped broadheads.
c) No person shall use a crossbow of less than one hundred twenty-five (125) pounds pull.
d) No person shall use a crossbow that does not have a mechanical safety.
e) Poisoned or explosive arrows are unlawful
f) No portion of the bow's riser (handle) or any track, trough, channel, arrow rest, or other device that attaches the bow's riser shall contact, support, or guide the arrow from a point rearward of the bow's brace height.
g) A long bow, compound bow or crossbow may be possessed in the filed before and after lawful shooting hours only if the nock of the arrow is not on the bowstring.

DEER

Crossbows are legal for taking antklered deer in thelate achery season..

A crossbower may take an antlered deer in the late archery season. This will be in effect until September 1, 2007. At that time it will reviewed.

WW- The fall turkey season (archery and gun) beginning in 2005 is new. A hunter can now use a crossbow in that fall archery season and also the Spring season which has been in effect for about 25 yeras or so.

The late season taking of a buck by a non-physically challenged crossbower is new. In the past these crossbowers could only take an antlerless deer. This allowance will be reviewed again at the next administrative rules process in two years. From my discussions with the higher ups in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources the chances of that review being faorable looks pretty good to me.

One step at a time..

Mark,

Progress is slow , but we are getting there.

I do believe that (f) was put into the regs some time back to counter that bow that shoots through some sort of a pipe system. I forgot what the name is. It was Acurr- something or another.

that may be so Woody but Mark appears correct to be concerned...it sounds like only trackless crossbows are allowed to me. :?

Woody: That (f) looks a little suspicious to me, also. Woody, I really appreciate your help in advising me how to proceed with a defense for crossbows in Alabama. I will present a statement tomorrow in the rehearing in Montgomery. As far as I know, Archie Phillips, taxidermist and moderater of an outdoor show will be the only pro crossbowers at the hearing. Wish us good luck; I will give a report when I return. Striper

Also to Illinois! I really wish we "non-disabled" people could use crossbows in Illinois. It seems foolish that we can't even shoot unwanted species of fish with a crossbow - like the Asian carp that are causing so many problems here...

Why is it that Indiana, a state that now allows crossbows, has kept the accurest bow illegal. The accurest does not hold a draw like the now legal crossbow, it shoots an arrow the same speed and trajectory as a compound or crossbow and is the safest arrow rest system in the world because the loaded arrow is totally enclosed prior to shooting???

Dunno.. but they sure have..

I'm guessing that the IDNR bowed down to the organized bowhunter groups and banned it.

You know the old bowhunter saying " If it ain't like my bow it should be banned."

Woody : That is good news . We need another border state around us allowing more liberal use of crossbows. Hopefully Kentucky will gather the survey data and stand by their guns next year . I hope we get the whole season .
