deer call(s), help me decide

Post by wabi »

As some of you know I've been making deer calls for several years now, and they have been very popular (and productive) with forum members. Some members consider a deer call an essential piece of hunting equipment and some members think my calls are far superior to the mass produced calls you can buy in stores.
They have even called in some decent bucks for me, I just wish my shooting ability was as good as my call making ability.

You might also know I've been having some problems that limit my ability to enjoy those activities I love, such as hunting, fishing, and even making those calls.

I'm still trying to get my aging body repaired (had more MRIs, a colonostopy & EGD, X-rays, and CT scans this month), but it seems that some problems are hard to fix. The good news - no cancers or ulcers. The bad news - a hiatal hernia & pinched nerves in my spine.

The pinched nerve(s) makes standing & walking very painful at times, and so far nothing has worked to relieve the pain.
This limits my ability to stand at the lathe and work on calls, so some days that type activity just isn't possible. :( What used to take a few hours can now take a few days to complete.

I still love to create wood turnings, though. I have been working on a deer call for a few days now, and finally have it close to finished (still needs a bit more wood finish & polishing). I made a picture showing 4 views of it. It's one of my personal favorite laminate colors - Fall Leaves.

This was my last reed, and I'm debating whether to order more supplies.
If I continue to make calls it may mean longer wait times for members to get one, but if there is enough interest I'll try to get some made before deer season rolls around!

Another problem I had last year was shipping to Canada. It seem like there is no way to ship insured at a reasonable rate so I would have to limit shipping to US addresses only. (I could ship to Canada, but couldn't guarantee delivery.)

I will post this as a poll. I'm thinking of a price of $40.00 (USD) to make & ship a call to a US address at the present cost of my materials and postage rates, but that could change slightly if my costs change.

Your calls are a work of art and the Excalibur community would be poorer with them.

I have a spinal neuro-stimulator that helps manage the pain from my failed back (L4-L5-S1 fusion). It helps but there is no real solution. Hang in there and do what you can when you can.

I have two of these calls and they WORK. I've called several deer in with them. Beautiful workmanship. If I were to order another one I would not care about the insurance (I live in Canada).
$50 Canadian is not going to make or break me.
It would be a shame if we couldn't get any but it's not worth being in pain to fill the orders. Wabi just do what you can without causing yourself undue pain.

I'm willing to bet that if you're able to make them, you will be able to sell em.

I've got one hanging from the rear view of my '68 chev. It compliments the truck nicely, and calls in a mean deer. Got another one that hangs out with the hunting gear.

I would certainly be interested in another one of your calls. The deer in my avatar walked right in to me last fall after using one of your calls.
