Harness Recommendations?

Post by Eck »

I'm dusting off my hunting gear after a longer-than-I'd-like-to-admit haitus, and can't find my harness. I don't recall what I used to have, other than it was cheap, an/or came with my tree stand (API Grand Slam).

Does anyone have recommendations as to what I should get in the way of a replacement? If it make any difference, I'm 6' 2", and a lithe 265 (LOL).

Thanks in advance.

I use the Hunter Safety System HSS Alpha Harness. It is a full body harness but not overly cumbersome.

hmmm, it seems my model is discontinued. This is what replaced it..

I'm a big fan of the Hunter Safety Systems harnesses as well. Though it seems they keep changing them every season or two. I have a Pro Series vest that looks like the current HSS-4X/5X model, just made in a smaller size. I also have one that looks like the current HSS-TreeStalker II. I like them because not only are they a harness, but they also have pockets to carry a lot of your gear and the deer drag (suspension relief strap) is second to none in my opinion. I'm wearing one every time I enter the woods even if I'm hunting from the ground just because of the usefulness for other purposes.

I have the HSS vest and don't forget the 30' lifeline which is the most important part of the system always connected going up and down! No excuse to have an accident!

Spend the money for the 30' lifeline!
It's cheaper than a hospital stay or worse!

I'm going to be getting a new one soon as well. I like the Seat of the Pants by Summit. Reading here what others like might help me choose.

Cabelas currently has some of the HSS models on sale with a pretty good discount, and they are throwing in the linemans strap free in case anyone else is in the market.

I bet one or two old harnesses "shrunk" over the winter . . . :D

Good Post.
I have the seat of the pants and initially loved the look, feel, and comfort of it. I have the deluxe model with the pockets. Fast forward 2-3 years and I wish I went with hss. The seat of the pants started fraying with 100's of I P's (Irish pennets). It drives me crazy. I love summit but come on guys. This thing frays so bad I kinda feel unsafe wearing it. In the future I will go elsewhere and prob try the hss bc the quality and durability of the seat o the pants deluxe model is of concern and the harness is made of material with questionable integrity. Maybe it's only the pockets(which I cut off bc they basically fell apart in 1 season) but when I'm wearing something that is designed to save my life, I demand that all parts are made of quality material and the seat o the pants is not it. In fact, screw it I'm now going to start looking for a replacement. Sorry for the rant guys but I feel ripped off.

Just adding my 2 cents about the HSS harness. I loved my older HSS model but gave it to a good friend who was on a strict budget and bought a newer HSS model with more pockets and attachment clips for grunt tube etc.

Although I liked both models the newer model is my favorite except for the padded shoulder straps which do take some time to get used to because the padded straps do change the stock butt to shoulder weld some because of the strap thickness. My older HSS model did not have padded shoulder straps.

Those sure look a lot better than mine.. All i've ever used is a 3/8" knotted rope. But last few years have not used a climber. My son uses it now. Like the ladder stands we have better. An old man's climber....

a couple of years a go i went with the HSS vest love it !!
i did some testing to see how it felt hanging and how to get back in the stand if i fell.
Im glad i did. I found i can get back in my stand IF I can get turned to face the tree. I can do it ok but i do see it as a challenge for less agile guys.
Whatever you get please take some time to test in a safe environment.
Hanging 20+ feet up is not the time to try and figure out what to do
The other thing i wish was better is the way they smash on the boys when hanging  you do not want to stay there long. Im hoping they are improving this.

My old one is an HSS vest type, gave one to the apprentice last year, I decided to get the HSS X-1. Picked it up last night at Cabelas. $59.99 on sale. Very comfortable!
