coffee and crossbows

Post by richard »

Hi everbody. New to the forum. Been bow hunting little over twenty years. Only one trophy on the wall in all that time but my belly gets bigger each season. Got my first crossbow kill last year 10-19-14 thanks to coffee. The does came in down wind blowin an goin so i kinda gave up on the hunt and decided to have some coffee. Hour later she came sneakin and lookin. With a vertical bow no way of getting a shot off but with the crossbow very little movement is needed. She came around and at 20 yards the matrix 330 did an awesome job feeding my family. So when things get slow try some coffee lol. I have learned alot from people on here so i just want to say thank you and good luck this season.

Welcome to the forum Richard!

I always think back to a little button buck we nicknamed "buttons" where I hunt. The little guy had almost no fear of humans. I had a feeder & food plot set up (still do) and I think he associated human presence and food as being linked. I have walked within 15-20 yards of buttons when he was at the feeder. He would look at me, then go right back to eating corn. I could even walk across the food plot and climb up in my ladder stand and 15 minutes later he was often munching acorns under the stand.

As the weather cooled I hunted more from the pop-up blind than the stand. One evening when no deer were showing up I decided to brew a fresh cup of coffee to warm up. I carried an alcohol burner, coffee bags, and a small pot to brew the coffee in. I set up the burner and put the pot on to boil (with the coffee bags I like to let them boil for a few minutes). Then I lit up a vanilla cigar while I waited. Setting back relaxing, my mind focused on the smell of the coffee and the cigar and buttons walks up to the open window of the blind and looks in at me.

Maybe coffee would make a good attractant scent for deer?

Nice to see another newbie on here. I used to take a thermos out with me. But needed to use pee too much. I started making up chocolate covered coffee beans. The calories are also nice when you are out in sub zero temps.

....Coffee eh...now should we use different blends for different seasons...like for doe in heat do we use a "mild vanilla blend" and for those ruttin bucks, a more bold dark "italian expresso."....come on Richard...there has to be more to this than you're willing to share with us!
