500+ grain bolts. Too much??

Post by Turkey Ninja »

I've narrowed down my bolt options to 2 different configurations. Ready to pull the trigger and spend some (more) money on this new addiction. One is with the Gold Tip Nitro Pro's (13.9gpi @ 18"). Looking for some thoughts and opinions on a ~511gr bolt with around 14.78 FOC. It oughta' be a pretty good combo from a Matrix 405 wouldn't y'all say? What kind of fps should I expect slinging a log like that? Thanks in advance!

I like it, sounds great!!! I'm shooting 542 grain 18" Spynal Tapps in mt 380 Mad Max, and getting 323 fps av. with 126# KE. These are not affected in the wind near as much at 70 yards as the same arrow built to 440 grains running 358 fps is at 50 yards, tested side by side. You will like em!!! but you better have a good target to stop em with that 405,,,,,,

The weight would be great with the 405 but you may want to consider the zombie both because of their tight tolerances and super stiff spine. You could go with the 110 grain brass inserts and 125-150gr points and get your weight up. Those would hit like a tonne of bricks.

X-2 on the Zombies or Spynal Tapps. That much weight and speed..I don't think there is any creature on land, that could stand up to that....Except maybe my mother in law.....I apologize ... That was a terrible thing to say..smile..

Nope, not to much at all. Stopping them is the hard part. Might want to invest in a metal detector or maybe a small chainsaw for arrow in tree removal. 8)

Definitely like the weight range. Bumping up to around 500gr this year myself. I like a higher FOC myself, 17-23%.

I took a 240lb hog with virtually that identical setup. Only difference being the GT pros were 19 inches and weight was around 520. The guide said he lost sight of the bolt about 100 yards past the hog and it was still flying.

On the chrony shooting 520 grains out of the 405 I was getting about 345 fps.

When I started hog hunting I was using a 556 grain bolt
When I started hitting hogs well over 200lbs I was not getting pass thru
I started using a 496grn bolt found bh pass thru but not full bolt
Tried a 406 grain bolt Now have pass thru on all the hogs I shoot
I have come to believe heavier does not mean better
May my aim be true and my arrow fly straight

I did a search for Gold Tip Nitro Pros and found this thread. Thanks for a great laugh. The mother-in-law comment was classic and the imagery of the bolt flying 100 yards through the air after passing through the hog was hilarious as well. You have to love this forum.
