Controlled Hunt 2015 Chapter 1

Post by Doe Master »

Monday morning started out with a couple of shots to the north of the property . At about 7:00 I caught movement to my 1 o`clock . It was a buck I had previous pictures of . He slowly made his way more to my right . When he hit a spot I thought was clear I shot . Problem with no wind and shooting a front stuffer equals a curtain of white smoke hanging in front of you on discharge . I waited the customary 1/2 hour and got down . I found no blood , no hair but did find some very dead branches now about 30 yards from my tree stand . :?
I got back up in the stand and radio`d my findings . My nephew informed me a buck went by him at a good clip right after the shot . We checked the grassy area there and there was no blood . I would rather a clean miss than a wounded deer .
I took a picture a day or two later there . I swear it looked clear . :)
Image
The next day started much the same way . Shots just after legal to the north . But I was in a different stand to get maybe a different perspective . At about 7:45 I caught movement off my left side . Here comes my friend from the day before . :) He messed around for a good 15 minutes tempting me with maybe a neck shot . But I held off to get a perfectly clear shot this time . When he finally came out he was less than 20 yards away . (This is one of my archery stands)
He was slightly quartered onto me . He looked up at me and I was not about to let him leave . When I shot he bounded forward but upon trying to land on his front legs he did not have immediate support . He came crashing down on top of a small blowdown . When he regained his composure he ran full tilt to the cedars 20 yards behind me .
I waited the longest 20 minutes and got down once again . This time there was no doubt with the blood trail . When I got to him it was neat to confirm it was one I had a picture of .
The after .

The before .

Because my nephew John was there and had not done a field dressing before . I felt it was time he did one . With the guidance of his father and myself . We walked him through it . We also informed him when he gets his first deer we will do it for him because he probably will hurt himself .
Image
With a energetic adult hauling out a deer in nasty stuff looks easy .
Who needs a ATV when you have a "John" deer .
Image
Brought out to Dad to take pictures .
Image
Image
Stopping for a break . Not for the person hauling but for the old guys trying to keep up with his younger legs .

I will continue this story with Chapter 2 . I was told my hunting stories get too long for one post . :)

Way to go Kevin! Congrats on a great buck. Good to have a helpful hunting crew too. :)

You are absolutely right Jim . It is great to have lots of help . As Mom said " We gave her lots of work " . She was wrapping the meat and dividing it up equally for all . :)

Starvin he was concerned at first he was going to do something wrong . I told him he ain`t going to make the deer any more dead . :)
He did well and did not pierce the stomach . :)

Good stuff...Lucky guy. We were out in 82 for 3 days (5 of us) and did not see one deer hunting 3 different properties.

The deer numbers have been very poor for us this year and last.
