deer, deer, everywhere there were deer

Post by wabi »

Well, we didn't shoot one, but we did have an exciting evening in the blind. When we went in (driving the landowner's Kubota UTV) we spooked 4 off the feeder. Got settled in and about 15 minutes later the same 4 (fawns) came right back to the feeder to munch corn.
A few minutes later Michael spotted 3 or 4 across the creek (100 yards or so away) moving to our right. Soon a doe & 2 fawns that crossed the creek were in the field to our right, but no good shot that direction because of brush.
Then a buck showed up and chased the doe into the woods.
While the buck was chasing the doe 3 of the fawns at the feeder moved off to our left, then the 2 fawns that had come in with the doe headed to the feeder to join the remaining fawn.
I told Michael it was up to him (these 2 fawns were fair sized), but if he held off there was a chance the doe may come back to join them and the buck might even follow.
It never happened, but he was OK with that.
We saw a grand total of 10 deer today, but 7 of them were fawns. At least the population is coming back up a little! :D
Gun season opens the 30th and he just happens to have that day off from school. Guess I'll have at least one more morning of not having to pry him out of bed!

Nice! It's always nice to see a few deer even if you don't bring one home. :)
