Although the limb failures seem to be front and center I truly believe the demise of the 405, if it truly is demised, is lack of sales. I can't quote numbers but from what I've heard from various sources it's never been a big seller.

All this talk about the death of the 405...

I'm betting it stays in the lineup though. I have had good luck with mine.

Unfortunately I am in process of getting new limbs on my M405 for the 2nd time in just over a year. Both times, the limb fracture has been on top of right limb about 2 inches from brace.

Less than 20 shots before fracture both times using a 457 grain bolt with careful attention to proper brace height.

Have hunted and shot my M380 ten-fold as compared with M405 using same bolt weight. No problems at all with M380.

Am going to try one more time and if I have another limb fracture I will plan to retire the M405 or see if I can manage to convince Excalibur to allow me a trade-in for another model.

I have had nothing but good luck with both my Axiom and M380 but am very disallusioned with the M405 problems. I think that Excalibur simply misjudged the adverse effect of taking an M380 construct and basically creating the M405 by increasing the riser length and power stroke from 13.1" to 13.9" in an effort to exceed the 400 FPS mark with a 350 grain bolt which realistically is not a bolt that would really ever be used. I thought that by using a significantly heavier bolt that I could avoid these problems.

Hope that the third try will be a charm.

Have not posted in awhile due to working all the time this is the first chance I've had to get on. I would hate to see the 405 go out of production. I've had mine for awhile and love it I have shot it quite a few times and have never had any problems with it.( Not really sure how many shots have been through the 405) I really have not had a chance to try different bolts through it and have only used diablo shafts with G5 125 gr broadheads. The 405 shoots perfectly and I really love the speed and accuracy of it. I always maintain the correct brace height. I just cannot believe Excalibur would discontinue this or the 380. Was there a bad batch of limbs made ? it seems there was a lot of micros with limb problems have not heard of any lately was the 405s that have limb problems made about the same time as the micros....just throwing that out there. I definitely cant wait to see the new models.......... :D

Could this be the beginning of the end of the "speed wars". Wouldn't it be ironic if the Exo-series models were to be resurrected.
Lou, I still have two of the Exo series bows. Every time I shoot them they become my "new favorite bow" !
I like that as I feel the same way about my Historic models-

I just noticed that Wyvern has removed the 405 off their web site.

I was thinking about picking up a 405 last month as I am in need of a new toy and am glad I waited. I am hoping the new bow announced at ATA is a new version of a 400 FPS bow but with more robust limbs. I would be willing to sacrifice a few inches of width on the limbs to have them robust with less stress.

Can't wait for the 5th to see what they unveil.

I was at the archery range the other day and talking to the guy I deal with and was told that Excalibur is in fact discontinuing production of the 405 due to the problems with the bow. I did ask him about this 350 LE that you all been talking about. He actually had one behind the counter that someone had ordered. I got to hold it. I want it now :(

The 350 LE could be a new version of the 355 for 2016. They did that with the 380, released the Lynx in 2014 and then Mad Max in 2015. We'll see in a few days.

I just sold my 405 a couple days ago to a guy in the neighbourhood, he was looking for speed and speed only. I never had any issues with the bow but I was getting paranoid every time I took a shot, thinking I'd hear that snap!(limb) .I bought a Exomag (2003) model from a friend a month ago and decided that's what I'll be using for the 2016 season. I ordered a boo string, going to get some big John arrows and still deciding on what scope to throw on it. Ya its wide, but those exo-series bows where great to me in the past and really do we need anything faster than 330 fps to take down a deer, black bear or a turkey? I don't think so

Price break on a really good scope from Wyvern.

Well folk's,,, it's cloudy here but the sky still seems stable in my area. I'm with Sew, so far I will stick with my Lynx, Mad Max, and Mega,,, I have had no problems with either, and as long as I don't have the problems some have with multiple failures,,, why would I change??? Twom 380's and a 405 has been hard on the deer around me for the past couple seasons,,, I ain't let'n up on em!!

Rusty Gate wrote:Also curious what the future holds. I've been shooting 20" 410 gr arrows from the get go out of my 405. This is my first crossbow. And thanks to all the good folks on this board received a lot of good schooling along the way...brace height in particular. This shortened my learning curve for sure! I did switch over to a nice 8ptbuck Flemish string this year, and like it a lot! :D But basically the bow is stock, other then the arrow and string upgrade. I went through the trigger recall w/o a hitch. The limbs are the original pair...even pulled the rookie bonehead move of a dry fire, thank you ADF! I wish I had kept a closer count of actual shots, but honestly it just never crossed my mind to do so...I've shot it a lot though. I have no doubt Excal will be there for me should the need arise. But like other's I'm curious to see how the future replacement limbs evolve for us 405 guys going forward...time will tell I guess. Love my 405!!!

Sorry I'm a little late on the reply..Happy New Year! The importance of proper brace height was knowledge I gained from the good folks on this board who have chaperoned this newb through the learning curve of the 405. I set my brace height at 5/8" as measured from the rail/riser seam to the front of my string....if I'm a bit further back, it's not a problem as it doesn't seem to effect accuracy at all. 8)
