Who Hunts in southern Ontario??

Post by bowmajik »

I'm just wondering who hunts deer in southern ontario and what their success rate is like? Thinking about scouting spots a little closer to home (toronto)

I lived and hunted most of my life in Niagara (WMU's 88 & 89). In terms of deer numbers and success rates, you would be better off driving 1 hour south of Toronto than driving 1 hour north of Toronto.

I hunt in 80,81 and 77c, I've been successful in the last few years, but very very difficult to get hunting permission if your close to Toronto, you'll need to drive at least 1 hour away get something, and even then it's not easy, but good luck!

What's the public land access like? I've always shyed away from southern ontario because of the lack of hunting opportunities and some horror stories I've been told by friends of mine who tried to hunt the hamilton area.

I hunt 78B.

My first day out was October 5th, on the stand at 4PM, had my deer by 6PM. Deer season was short this year. Had 5 does to choose from.

Not sure if the horror stories relate to the gun hunt or the archery season. From what I've heard...and seen, the gun hunters get scrutinized a lot.

My preference is to find private properties instead of public land where hunt pressure is higher.

Try spending a half day nicely introducing yourself to landowners during the offseason and don't be shy about offering something in exchange, such as offering a days help to the farmer or landowner. I find it is easier to receive permission during the archery season.

I have not had much difficulty obtaining great properties this way. Not always am I successful but I put my best foot forward and I have been rewarded for trying.

I always ask if the landowner has any rules for me to follow and if he does I follow them.

Head to your local town office and have a look at the "tax role" to find out who owns what. Accompanying maps will show you property boundaries. Another is to look at the township GIS survey which will also show property lines as well as 'right of ways'. A UNmaintained(bush) 'right of way' is a great place to hunt deer because its town land. Right of ways are usually 66 feet wide. Check the discharge map to ensure you are able to discharge bows and firearms.

I hunt 78 about 10 mins north of bass pro shops. Deer population is ok not as good as 10 years ago but I'm not complaining. No crown land around, getting permission unless you know someone is like winning the lottery. Good luck

72A, one doe and 3 outings. Cams show that deer were largely nocturnal.

78B here as well. Wasted my tag on a Doe with a Slug back in November. No crossbow action this year. Lots of deer around Mount Albert this year.
