Dumb Question: Why Don't We Eat Yotes?

Post by TheBig1 »

Ok, just like the title says, why is it that we don't eat coyotes?

They scavenge and eat meat just like a bear, opossum, coon, and other animals that people eat. One guy told me it's because they're dogs. Well, from watching Mel Gibson in The Patriot, I heard that dog is a good meal.

So why is it that we pretty much shoot coyotes, take a pic, skin it, and toss it over the bank for the other scavengers to eat?

It's ok, you can laugh at me, I really want to know.

From what I see meat eaters just keep on adding seasoning ,, So I guess yotes are edible with enough seasoning ..

Coyotes are like carp. Way too many of them, and they stink

I would eat one, right after every other meat has been eliminated to extiction

You need to shoot one and smell it!
They can carry a lot of different diseases, so not recommended.
BTW: turkey vultures also scavenge like other animals mentioned, maybe could throw one in the pot also! :P
From what it sounds like from reading, they are edible, but better you than me!

Well maybe I will shoot a coyote and turkey vulture. Perhaps I'll stuff the coyote with the turkey vulture and call it a Turyoten.

And perhaps I'll be kind enough to bring my Turyoten to Boofest if I'm blessed enough to be able to attend.

Probably taste similar to any other meat with a heavy coating of this on it.

It's because those coyotes hiding just over the edge of the bank you mentioned are hungry, and eating their brother or sister may save a fawn.

MMM, MMM! I do love me some spice! I thought about rubbing it down with a nice dry rub, throwing it in a pit, and letting it cook for several hours nice and slow. I'll bet it taste just like chicken!

I guess it's physically possible to eat yotes but culturally we have a great aversion to it. Kind of like why we don't date our moms and sisters and cousins. Some cultures do it but it's GROSS!

I did two years of exchange duties with the US Military back during the first gulf war.

During that time I spent a couple of months at one of their bases in Korea where dog was "on the menu".

Being the curious type a couple of us decided to try it. Now, I won't say that I gagged or anything like that although there is some "mental obstacles" to overcome (but hey, I eat heart and liver so figured I could keep it down at least).

What I can say (and these are "farmed dogs" over there) that it was the toughest and strangest piece of meat I have ever eaten. I can't describe the taste as "it tastes like ....." because it doesn't taste like anything else I have ever eaten (wild or domesticated).

Now if I was starving in the woods and the only thing I could scratch out was a wolf or a yote, I wouldn't go hungry, but think if I could even pop a chipmunk that might just be a little higher on the menu :)

People eat bear meat.

Bears eat lumpy Pampers, coyotes not so much. Maybe that's because bears are bigger and stronger and get first dibs.

Religions that ban eating pork likely got their idea because of health risks associated with undercooked pork. Pigs and bears eat ANYTHING.

Just cook your coyote well done. Don't be tempted with Coyote Tartare, or even medium rare.

I found this on the internet.

http://www.foremostcoyotehunting.com/20 ... oyote.html

Although my original question is valid and I'd be interested in trying it based on the recipes on this site, I did think that the last recipe, Sun Dried Coyote, was pretty unique.
