Upland Game Birds

Post by k1314 »

Hello All:

I am new to the forum and was wondering whether aside from big game, does anyone hunt upland game birds with a crossbow?

If so, what accessories work best? (e.g. judo heads, extra fletching, etc...).

Thanks,

K

I use the following "accessories:"

- 20 gauge double barrel
- 4 legged pointer

Seriously though I wish you the best of luck as upland with Xbow is beyond my skill level.

Those sound like the standard fare for upland. Having a good dog makes all the difference.

Some pheasant out my way in the west but mostly grouse in the forests, then ptarmigan up high.

I've hunted them with my recurve but wondered about using a crossbow.

12ga o/u 26" barrels, sk chokes, 2 3/4" low brass 7/8oz no6 shot.
7 year old Brittany
Good walking boots
Light briar proof bibs
Garmin Colorado GPS

That's my list

I don't think u can legally use a crossbow on upland birds in WI and honestly wouldn't waste my time trying......

Btw, best part of this kind of hunting is watching the dog work.

I use the same method as Species does.

However I used to know a guy who made his own points, similar to the ones below, to decapitate ruffed grouse with his vertical recurve bow.

I think these would work great at close distances(under twenty yards) and arrow loss would be minimal. Lit nocks would definitely be a plus also. I said in another thread that I wasn't going to buy any gear this year, but after seeing this, I'm gonna get a set and try them out. They look more efficient than the blunts I have been using.

Hankenhunter, the snaros are great but you'll have to use an extra long arrow, to clear your stirrup, and put it into your quiver by the nock end. Great for close range grouse and rabbits...head shots.

Did you lose many arrows? How accurate are they? With blunts I am dead nuts on to 30 yards. After that, things go down hill rapidly.
