extra tag farse
extra tag farse
i live in 82a and own about 400 acres
As far as extra tags go they should be offered to landowners or people who live in the area. I tried to call in when they first went on sale but 82a was sold out by 9am. Well i thought that would be alright since there were going to be 200 more sold for archery and muzzleloader on sept 1. So i called at 9:30 am and guess what, there were very few left and the mnr said that there was a lineup and they wouldn't have enough tags to do the lineup.
My beef is they don't offer any extra tags for landowners or people who live in the area. I don't beleive that it is right that somebody that doesn't live in the area should be able to have the same chance to get a tag as a landowner, it's my crops they are eating, give the landowners 2 or 3 days to apply for extra tags before offering them to just anybody.
This is my 2 cents, you may not agree but it's the way a landowner feels!!!!!!

CD, that's what the government (MNR) claims, but landowners do get first crack at the "Controlled Hunt", and Moose tags.CDNGUNNER.... wrote:![]()

the landowner owns the land not the deer.
We all should get an EQUAL oppertunity to get a tag!
The way I see it, I don't own my children, but since they live in my house, they obey my rules, after all the government doesn't feed them.

BTW, I don't own any hunting land.

WOO WOO!! hold on here. Let me explain something to all of you, both as a landowner and once a non-landowner.
First of all pro wheel and bstout are absolutely correct. Before I became a landowner my views were that the farmer didn't own the wildlife, but it was everyone's. My wife and I scripped and saved to purchase 810 acres of primo uno habitat. That's when my views started to change.
As responsible landowners we manage our property with the wildlife always at the fore front. Here's what I mean!!
Here in Saskatchewan as a land owner we own all of the vegetation and water at the top of the land and also 6 inches of soil. We do not own the mineral rights below this. If I want to dig a pit 50 feet deep to sell gravel, I need a special permit or permission from the Gov.
Now for the past 9 years I've watched deer, moose, bears, wolves coyotes, lynx, bobcats, beavers, racoons, squirrels, etc.etc.ect. a host of birds I care not to list, eat MY VEGETATION, and eat one another.
This would absolutely not be possible, if I had chosen to bull doze all of my trees, shrubs, grasses, forbs and so on, to try and get more farm land, thus increasing my revenue 5 fold. This year we will be making $5146.00 (if we get paid) with $1452.00 taxes, not icluding other expenses. Now like I said, if we were to clear all of the 810 acres we could easily gross 4 times that amount, now who in their right mind wouldn't do that. ME!!!
Now my point is, if I'm doing all of this, why the HELL wouldn't I get first crack at the extra deer tags? Why should I pay for any of my Big Game tags at all? Why aren't I compensated for losing some extra revenue? Those animal and birds would not be there if they couldn't eat our Alfalfa, Grains, or Natural plants that we have left, for Gods critters. So in a way we the landowners, wheather you have 10,000 acres or just 10 acres do feed the Wildlife so that they can live and reproduce.
Pro wheel or bstout never said they wanted to own totally all the deer, but were just asking for a little seniority over whats on their property. I believe its up to the Sportsmen of this country to take control of making sure the Wildlife benefits and prospers, not the Government. They only enforce the Wildlife Act.
What I should do is clear all of my trees in one big pile, burn them, then desicate the vegetation that remaining, and turn our land into a moon scape. I bet that'll get people's attention, for once they'll see how vital our resources are, a bit of an eye opener.
Please accept my venting, we can all learn this way. I'm very, very, very, passionate about Mother Nature!!!!

IMO, the dam government's got their fingers in more than they should.
I believe in management, so the day that they feed the wildlife, is the day that they can dictate and have total control.
Like they say, and I paraphase: "He who pays the piper, should be able to call the tune"

I am not a land owner. That being said,I have to side with the landowners on this one. They have to be given first crack. I'm not saying they should get them all but I think they have a right to a certain number of them. If I'm a land owner and I don't get any additional tags, nobody is filling them on my land.
Question. If you shoot a deer without a tag on your property and a ministry cowboy catches you, would you be charged?
Answer. Yes, its poaching because the deer do not belong to you.
Regs say if you have problem wildlife( big game such as deer) you have to do a whole lot of Gov't paper work.
Hunting tags are for hunters, otherwise they could call them farmertags.
In Ontario, there are such special tags. Wouldn't you know it they are called "Farmers Deer Licence" They are a guarenteed license.
So you guys are up one already.
You guys want MORE. Doesn't seem fair.
So lets sum it up
Reg deer license
Farm deer license
And oppertunity to shoot deer that damage crops
And now you want even more tags
Bite me!

First of all cdngunner I'm not Jeffrey Dollmer, I don't eat people. You live to far away, and I don't know if you're chocolate or vanilla.
Did you come on this forum to be a Renegade just plain provocative.
I'll explain my position one more time.
If Bill Gates hired me at minimum wage, and I invented Windows XP, which made Billy, million and millions of dollars. Would it not be resonable that maybe I should get a company bonus for doing that? Would it not be in a Corporate Executives best interest to compensate me for it? I leave you with these questions.
Stick around buddy!! The forum members can educate you along with everyone else. We all learn from one another.
Have a good day cdngunner, I will not take this any further.

Usually the MNR will accomodate the landowners first. However last year, in some WMUs, some additional tags went unsold. Therefore, because of greed, and wanting to milk every last drop from a "cash cow", the MNR sells the tags on a first-come-first serve basis.
IMO, I don't mind paying full price for a licence, but feel that additional tags should sell for a nominal fee, just like in other parts of Canada, and in the US.

You know what guys???????????
I don't think it would make any difference if landowners were given first dibs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Afterall, look at the number of tags STILL remaining in WMU 63B, 64B and 64A.
Aren't these the same area's that landowners threatened to do an illigal hunt if the MNR didn't do something, caused
Apparently, deer are causing 1000's of dollars in crop damage BUT these same landowners hesitate to spend $ 34.00 to buy an additional tag.
And try and get permission to hunt these areas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anybody hear the story about the boy who cried wolf, too many times???? Is what the MNR will be saying next time,,,,,COUNT ON IT.

I see this topic as one of those "I need more information to form a legitimate opinion".
Both sides have put up VERY strong arguments. Because I hunt in Eastern Ontario where all the land is privately owned, I can see the hunter's point of view. Because I have seen the damage that wildlife has done, I can see the farmers point of view.
One point we may be over looking here is, the MNR does not control who hunts exactly where. For instance, the Jones clan collectively own 2,000 acres. The Jones' don't care to hunt, and they are willing to sacrifice their crops because, they can. They forgo their hunting tags. The Smiths own 300 acres and it is 100% agricultural, surrounded by the Jones. Their crops are devastated by the herds of deer wandering to and from the Jones' property. The Smiths purchase all the tags they can, and it's still not enough to combat the herds that are feasting on their crops.
So, does the MNR sell the Smiths more tags, or all the hunters more tags, with aspirations that the Smiths will permit hunters onto their land to help control the herd?
Personally, I don't have an answer that I can support?

In b.c. the landowner has no claim to the wildlife on his property
and if he posts it as no hunting that also means him the reasoning
behind this is it stops people setting up private clubs for their
friends and baring the residents of the area from using it. I agre with
this because what we are seeing now is our provincal government trying
to sell large tracs of land to foreign interests and weather its german
hunters or english anti hunters this will start a war with the locals so
there is two sides to every issue so be careful what you wish for
cause you might get it in end

I agree prowheel, Everyone has the same chance to apply or buy a deer tag that includes you cdngunner, what he is saying is that landowners and residents of the WMU should get first crack at the additional seal since they live and hunt in that area, what better way to control the population than an landowner who hunts deer to have an extra tag, I know if I were a landowner and didnt get an extra tag, I would be peaved(sp?), and you think that would change mind and let other hunters to come in and harvest a deer with the additional seal, I think NOT! Since they are gonna start letting the residents of the north get more tags for moose can't they do the same for residents of south that own land to hunt deer. I am not a landowner but I hunt and live in 82A and I was kind pi$$ed that I couldn't get an extra tag also. I have also talked to a number of residents that feel the same way I do, and are not to happy either that they couldn't buy an additional tag. This is not an issue of crop damaged its an issue of who should get the first chance to get an addtional seal, I also would like the phonelines open for 2-3 days for residents to get additional seals first, then the free for all could start after.

Very good point Claude, however whether the owner has claim to the wildlife on his property is irrevelent. Having contol and rights over his land, he can post "No Tresspassing" signs and hunt to his heart's content.
That's why I say, cut the landowner some slack, and he might give the hunter an opportunity to hunt as well.
After all, what good are tags if there's no place to use them. Don't forget, a licence doesn't give anyone the right to trespass.
