Opening day gobbler

Post by strum »

What an awesome morning here in Ga!!
Sorry guys no pics. I dressed him out so fast i forgot to take any.
It could not have been a more textbook hunt.
Got set up . Waited for daylight and heard first gobble way off to my left.
Then i hear one close to my right so I turn that way and give a soft yelp er two.
all the sudden a squirrel starts going crazy in between us. I never figgured that one out but i thought it was gonna kill my chance.
Finally he shut up and after it calmed down the gobbler sounded off again.
So i gave him a few very soft yelps and a cluck. nothing for 5 mins or so then
this repeated about 4 times.
I see something move and its a turk flying from his direction off the ridge to my left. Crap !! I think im done.
Then I here him gobble very loudly from the direction i had seen him fly .
Ohh its on now!! i learned from past years they like to come up from where he had flew so he wasnt comfortable coming to me from where he was roosting. I just gave him a sweet .. here i am come see me yelp and shut up .
then he gobbles closer but to my left so i knew he had circled and was headed up. I just turned that way and waited. After a few mins there he was looking for his sweetheart. I let him get behind an oak and pulled up.
When he comes out i had the red dot on him but i let him put on a show first. he would strut a little then stop and stretch that head high searching for his honey . I had enough and dropped the hammer. I know its not a crossbow
but its still a trophy to me.
9 1/2" beard 1" spurs.
This is no 3 from this same blown down pine tree. And the second kill (same spot) with no decoy and no blind. Im starting to think decoys are useless

Crossbow, vertical bow or shotgun . Doesn`t matter one bit to me . When trying to outwit something that is 20 plus pounds of eyeball and keen hearing . Use whatever . :)
Thanks for taking us people who still have a month to go along . :)
