Bullheads for turkey with the Excalibur.

Post by Partikle »

Hey gang,

I picked up some Magnus bullheads and was getting ready to do some target shooting but when I screw them into my standard 20" bolt, they don't clear the foot stirrup. They don't even sit far enough back for the bolt to touch the string because the bullhead hits the aluminum limb holder. How do you get around this? 25" bolts?

Thanks.

It would probably be helpful to post which bow you are shooting so someone with experience could give you a winning arrow recipe for the bullheads. They are a turkey broadhead that intiruges me...love watching the kill shots on YouTube. I have never shot them so I can't give particulars. Good luck with them!

I shoot them with my 380 Matrix . i use a 20" arrow and have DR, Stirrup front end and she clears just fine . Get a hold of Bid John on the form and he will help you with some arrows. it would help to know what bow your are shooting.

Use something to cock the jaws and measure from that point to extend beyond the stirrup. It sounds like you're shooting an Exo series bow which may well mean a 25" arrow. This will be fine but you'll have to deal with arrows sticking out that far. The only pain in the posterior is not being able to rest the stirrup on the ground when you're hunting.
Also, from what I've seen, guys will use old pillows to shoot at to test and zero in these broadheads. You should absolutely test them before hunting with them.

I have 20" Gold Tip Laser-2 graphite and I'm shooting an ExoMax.

Here they are with a slick trick

and here they are with a bullhead

I can't even back the arrow up far enough to touch the string and the bullhead would smash into the stirrup if I tired to shoot it. I had a couple of sheets of burlap and canvas paining drop sheets hanging over a clothes line to stop the bullhead but I am unable to use them with this set up. I would need another 5" of bolt to clear the stirrup.

The big bullheads? Ya, 125g. Should I switch to the 100g or which will be better with a 25" bolt?

you have another option . you can use a rope stirrup and it will drop out of the way so your bullhead will clear with no problem. that way you can use the arrows you have . the diff. in the two broadheads is the blade size all you have to do is unscrew the big ones and put in the small ones if you chose to try the smaller ones. hope this helps you .

There is still about a 1/2" gap between the back of the bolt and the string if I use these bolts with a string stirrup. I think that might cause an issue shooting the bolts straight.

You absolutely cannot use those arrows with those broadheads. Period. There is NO way around it. The only options I see are to use an arrow that extends beyond your stirrup or use a different broadhead. That's it. The smaller ones will still be unusable. You also cannot use a broadhead that is so wide it contacts the stirrup. You won't know where you're launching the arrow. Those broadheads are designed to extend beyond your stirrup. By the position of your arrow in the picture I'm guessing you're shooting an Exo series bow. I don't like that configuration personally. In my Y25 Exomax I have my arrows cut long enough to extend halfway into the stirrup so there's no chance of ever unloading an arrow into my foot because I can't get my foot into the stirrup with an arrow in it.

I agree Paul. That is a disaster waiting to happen. I'll look into some 25" bolts to clear the stirrup. No other option.

What if you forget to fold it before you shoot? I've forgotten to load a bolt and dry fired the bow once but no one gets hurt when you do that. I don't even want to think what would happen if I pulled the trigger on the exomax and the broadhead hit the stirrup. Something would blow up in my face. I'll go for the longer arrows.
