Cock Vane and Spine...

Post by Drew »

Quick question to you expert arrow builders out there. I just received 18 spine matched ZS's from South Shore. So when I build these up, does it matter if I put the cock vane on the stiff side or 180 degrees opposite?

No expert here, a total noob. I indexed mine so the stiff side was down, but I don't think it matters. At least I hope not

I believe the theory is to have the stiff side up so the weaker part of the shaft is supported along the rail. I don't know how much difference that will really make if the orientation of cock vane and spine is the same with all your arrows. Give Jerry a call and hear what he has to say.

Put the cock vane where Jerry has marked it.

That's how I indexed mine. But are you saying that the opposite side of the mark is where the stiffest plane should be?

I mark the softest part for the cock vane. I do not know what Jerry marks.

That's what I was getting at, is the mark there for the cock vane or the stiff side of the spine.

From the horse's mouth:

Derrick, if you put it between the hen vanes or inline with the cock vane it will react the same way.

I don't index, but I have read a lot about it, and spoke with Jerry, and some others. This is really your preference, but placing them consistently is the going to get the best results. I would line up the cock vane with the mark to keep it simple, and get the vane as close to the mark as possible. That's what my OCD tells me.
