Back to the BD400

Post by SEW »

Little lately has been said about the BD400. Those of you who know me, know that long range shooting isn't something I shy away from. Actually, not really long range: just out to 100 yds.
I've been comparing my M380, 405, and BD400 over the past 2 months. Soon, I'll post my thoughts. With >2,000 shots thru the 380, >1,100 thru the 405 and countless hours of remaining cocked, I've had no limb failures, splintering, etc.
The BD400 has appx 400 shots on it. I can tell no accuracy difference. To me, the BD is better designed in many respects. The limb mounting geometry just looks less stressed. The BD is slightly faster than the 380 and well slower than the 405.
However, much more on this later.
The stock design will likely be more comfortable for those under 6'. Do not write this xbow off. I think it is likely Excal's most dependable, high performance xbow to date. Shoulder one and shoot one if you have a chance. I bet you'll be impressed.

After spending some time with the Bulldog 400, I agree with SEW's initial findings. I personally would like to see the BD configuration as standard for Excal crossbows.

a Mega 405 is 36.2 in length and a BULLdog is 35.8. the 400 being a bull pup didnt shave much of anything in length and its got trigger linkage. more to go wrong. to be a true bullpup and save length theyd have to move the scope mount forward to make length of pull match up. much as i like to see a bullpup Micro as you shave weight these powerful recurves they are gonna kick like a mule.

Foofoo, as I get older I get shorter. Currently between 5'9 1/2"- 5'10". The BD400 just fits me better for offhand shooting or off my knee. Shooting off a rest, the Matrix may have a slight advantage. Overall, to me, the BD400 just fits me better.
