Missouri corn belt 8 pointer

Post by grouse »

This is my 5th year to hunt with a crossbow and until now I have yet to kill an antlered buck with my Excalibur. I have killed at least one doe or button buck each year but no mature bucks. In September I shot a nice doe after I passed on an easy 20 yard shot on an antlered buck. I didn't want to pass up the shot but we have a 4 point minimum on one side and in the early morning light I couldn't tell if he had brow tines although it was easy to see the three main points on each antler. This scene has repeated every year that I have carried a crossbow with bucks in range that I can't tell if they are are legal or not.

Thursday evening my luck changed. I arrived at my stand at 4:30 and settled in. At around 5:25 I spotted a deer and quickly determined that it carried antlers. As it got closer the afternoon sunshine hit his head and I saw at least one brow tine. When he was finally in range I waited for him to step to where I could get an open shot at his chest and I then released a Zombie with a slick trick magnum and a lumenoc, which disappeared right where I aimed it with a thwack.

After reading the story on this forum about our fellow hunter in Oklahoma who lost some hind quarter meat to coyotes within 30 minutes, and because daylight was quickly fading, I climbed down having waited only 10 minutes. I soon found lots of blood and knew I was going to find the deer, but I still worried that I might have been wrong about the brow tines. Within a few minutes my concerns proved unfounded as I walked up on a big, dead 8 pointer.

I took a few pictures and down loaded one to photobucket but when I tried to transfer it to this post all I could manage was a bunch of code. I'll keep trying to figure it out.
