Wow! What a night.Buck Mania! Crippled deer down.

Post by RexKay »

Other night sitting in stand at neighbors across the road in NE corner of cut bean field I'm watching 12 deer come from north beans into cut beans. Directly in front of "center tripod" which is my 15 ft Ameristep. Haven't sat it yet,as it's right at the tip of a field dividing thicket line. Well, next evening(last night) I squeezed into the tripod. Face mask on,380 on rail. Quite motionless, quite uncomfortable until I see deer in north beans. So into a shouldered frozen shooting position I go.
1st deer, little fawns, then young buck emerges.i see him walking on 3 legs. Staying close to north bordering treeline, doing his thing. He take 2 steps, regain, take 2 more,regain...not moving to quick. 2 does join youngsters not 20 yds in front of me. Now folks there is zero cover, except the fabric wrap around skirt. I'm frozen stiff, alert moms close, watching crippled buck....then out comes another decent 8pt. At this point I'm in deer hunters euphoria. Now I'm freakin out big time. The bigger buck circles the smaller wounded deer. His bullying body language showing. He knocks over the smaller buck!! Holy TV stuff!! 1st time seeing that rutting behavior in the flesh.
The bigger buck walked off to my left(west, as I'm facing north). As I see the smaller buck get up and scurry away coming towards the 4 deer directly in front of me. As I'm watching the bigger buck, out of north bordering tree line, buck after buck, after buck, after buck, after buck after buck emerged. I seen a total of 8 different bucks in the cut bean field. Wow!!!. I text my neighbor hunting 100 south of me"see any" he says no... I text wounded buck coming. He says take him. I shot him at 25 yds. He made it about 30 yds and crashed. After shot all hell broke loose as there's deer with "racks" running all over. Waited til dark, got down and walked over to deer. Turned out to be 5pt. His right forearm had a 4 inch long area down to white bone. Front hoof swollen about 4 inches square. Under each hoof nail it was soft and swollen round nickel sized. He'll be a good meat scrub buck that I'm splitting with my neighbor. What an incredible night in stand. I seen it all that hunt. Been blessed with a good season with the most bucks I've ever seen in a season. I absolutely love the 1st 2 weeks of November, before the 15th.
Good luck out there forum folks!

Way to go Rex. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait for the Michigan late season muzzle load hunt. Hope I see one of those bucks... :)

Good for you man for putting down the injured one rather than holding out for bigger antlers. Must have been a quite a site to see that night.
