Upon learning that I had taken up crossbows this year, and had 2, a 77 year old friend of mine asked me if he could use my back up bow to try and "take one last deer".
How can you turn down a request like that??
So I got him over to my cabin, spent an hour walking him through the bow and having him cock it and shoot it several times, which he did without an issue.
I was more concerned about him hurting himself than anything else.
So a couple days ago he's sitting in the new ground blind that he bought just for this hunt and he smokes a 5 pt at 25 yds.
Now he was supposed to be letting me or one of a couple other guys know when he was hunting so we could help him if he got one.
Well he didn't do that, and as it turned out no one was around to help him.
So he went out, with his 2 knee replacements, 2 hip replacements and one shoulder replacement and his 120 lbs. 75 year old wife, and in the dark dragged the buck out.
Fortunately the 380 and the NAP 100 gr Maxx did a good job and the buck only ran 50 yds, but it was all downhill through brush to a creek bottom.
BUT, he got it out without incident, and is pretty happy.
So am I, I was glad to be able to help him. Makes my season a success already!
(ME??? I'm still looking for my first Xbow deer, although I passed a 6 pt and spike last night because I hunt in a buck only county and the property owner where I hunt requires 8 points or better to be shot. Some day it will happen for me.)
