Bolt length for micro 355 long distance target shooting

Post by kjl »

Has anyone been able to get tight groups with shorter bolts using a micro 355 or supressor beyond 50 yds. If so what set up works best for you? I m getting 4" groups at 60yds with 16.5 inch .001 executioners ,92 gr inserts, blazer vanes, lumenocks ,125 gr points.
I would like to get tighter groups and use shorter bolts. Any advice would appreciated. Thanx in advance!

I can get 3-arrow, sub 2" @ 60y using 16" 410gn Zombies, spine indexed and weight matched out of a Matrix 310. I see nothing wrong in your arrow recipe.

Are you shooting from a bench? Do you have a TriggerTech? Have you checked ALL fasteners?

More information about your current setup required. I used Zombie Slayers with my 335 Micro with 100 grain heads and 92 grain inserts up front realizing 2" groups at 50 yards free hand. Off sticks I could nip each arrow at 50 yards. .003" straightness, no spine indexing using the "Bolt" jig with 2" Blazer Vanes.
On another study with broadheads I found that the same setup with my 330 Matrix & 355 Matrix broader spacings with the faster bow using the exact same arrows & heads. Perplexing to me at the time, but thrust plays a large role in spine recovery. I would not have believed that until i proved it to myself.

Yes ,off bench
Not spine indexed
Yes weight matched within 1 gr or less
I guess I should try all 3 vanes as cock vane and mark
No triggertech
Stock string with stars, 1/4" off bumpers 355 suppressor
Fasteners are tight

Just got my bow, second day shooting. maybe just need to get feel for bow
Previously had a matrix 380

I was at 15" total length. You have a longer power stroke on the 355 so maybe 16" will be better. Just make sure you cannot get your foot in the stirrup with an arrow in the channel. Sounds crazy, but it has happened where someone put a bolt into their foot uncocking their bow.

You'll have some great arrows soon. I started cutting the length down for only one reason, I did not want my broadheads bumping my bow hanger when hunting in the stand. I recommend keeping them as long as possible to suit your hunting needs.

For Dan's purposes the shortened arrows meet his needs. However, keep in mind that the longer arrows will be more stable. The further you shoot the more pronounced this will be. I personally want my arrows as long as possible without sticking out past the stirrup with a broadhead attached. I learned the hard way what a pib an arrow reaching past the stirrup is in a blind. If I was strictly shooting long range off the bench longer arrows would be no problem.

Ok
Thanks to everyone's advice, I finally made my decision.
I went with 16.5 inch zombie slayers .001
110 grain inserts, 125 grain points
Blazer vanes
Lumenocks
Thanks don for marking my cock vane placement.
My scale says I m about 432.4 grain total bolt weight
Whole dozen of finished bolts are within .5 grains of eachother
I got some shooting in today, sunny, -5 degrees C, 20km/hr crosswind using a rest.
Micro suppressor speed dial set at 315 shooting bang on at 60 yds.
At 40 yds bolts are very tight, I'm afraid to shoot at same bullseye lol
At 60 yds I got my 3 bolt grouping down to 2 3/4 " on a windy day, I'm impressed
I had 4" groups with similar set up with executioners .001 except i was using 92 gr inserts with no wind off a rest.
I ve already forgot about going with shorter bolts,
Bow Feels smooth, quiet and accurate.
Thanks keith
