Nice 6-pointer harvested
Advanced scouting paid off, as I harvested a nice six pointer that went 158 lbs after clean dressed. Clean dressed as in: Pelvis split, organs and fat removed all the way up thru the esophagus. Clean as a whistle.
I was expecting a 20+ yard shot, but the buck did'nt follow my scripted plan. Instead of coming thru the funnel/draw, the buck (alone this time), looped around through another meadow feeding as he made his way to the back forty where I was.
Legal shooting hours were waning, and the wind and rain were driving. The buck finally came in to ~ 40+ yards, and I let loose with the 40 yard pin. It seemed like eternity between the loosing of the bolt and the impact sound on the deer.
I waited about 30 mins, and started blood trailing. Heavy rain and winds hampered my search, so I marked last blood and called a buddy.
This morning we picked up the trail and found the buck not more than 30 yards from where I stopped tracking last night. His total distance traveled was about 90+ yards.
Not a text book shot, but I have a nice deer hanging in the shed now. The bolt struck the buck farther back than planned, but severed the aorta which probably lead to his giving up the ghost in under 20 seconds.
I'll have pics within the week.

Carl, I'll finally got out in the car by myself this weekend, but I have to use the drive thrus for just about everything. I have to use a walker to go elsewhere but only can go about 100 yds before my hip starts to tighten up.
My daughter tells me the same thing, she says she can't bring a boyfriend home. they just look down and stammer "y-y-y-es s-s-ir, I'll have your daughter home by 9 pm".

Carl,
Way to go, son! I knew you had it in you! Let's see a picture.
(sounds like a scene from a Mel Gibson movie...."40+ yards in poor light, a driving rain and wind....only maybe 10 guys in the whole world could have made that shot!")
PS - what was the overnight temperature and was the meat all okay?
cheers,
Mikey Vee

Hi Mikey,
I certainly don't consider myself an expert shot. I practice enough in the late summer to feel confident about shots,...sort of.
There's alot of guys here that shoot all year round and could put me to shame on a 3-d course.
The overnight temp was about 40 F. So, yes the meat is fine. I've encorporated some of the practices outlined in the link below. I did a copious cold water carcass wash, followed by a hot water wash. Patted it dry and sprinkled pepper in the cavity as per Woodsman's recommendation from hunting caribou up North. Then packed the deer with 40 lbs of block ice. It's all good!!
I don't have a digital cam, but took a few pics. Also, my local proshop took a pic as well and will be posting it on their web site.
