Imagine coming across this scene.

Post by Woody Williams »

These two elk's horns were locked together for some unknown number of days as evidenced by how thin they are. The one on the ground is dead. The other survived only because this guy was brave enough to help unlock the horns.

Nice pictures. It was good that they saved one. I'm sure it is not uncommon for those fellas to get locked together.

That kinda raises the ethical question as to whether the man had any business interfering. Perhaps he simply should have witnessed it, and left.

What say you?

Cheers!

I think he did the right thing too, but he took a serious risk!

A saw might have been a quicker and safer option. (saw off the dead one's and stay clear of the living one)

I would have tried to free the animal.

I'd say the risk wasn't too great. I imagine the one which was still alive was exhausted and didn't leave in a big hurry.

I saw a show on TV when I was a kid and they came across two bucks locked together like that. The guy shot the antler off one of the deer busting it off and freeing the two of them.

They also had a display at the front entrance of the museum of Nature in Ottawa about 4 or 5 years ago. The racks of two dead moose locked together.

Where did you find these pictures Woody?

Red,

I think he did use a saw.

One of those cable saws..

Notice the position of his hands in #2 and #3. In #2 it looks like he is putting the saw on the antler . In #3 it looks like he might be sawing.

Also notice in #4 that the dead elk is missing his right anter and the live elk is now a 6 X 12...
