The Doe went 350 yds!

Post by Deadeye »

Sunday night I shot a large doe at 33 yd's right behind the shoulder. Double lung. The deer ran 350 yd's plus! Hardly any blood, infact I couldn't find the deer until the next morning.

When I found her, The impact hole was like a 7mm had been used. I was using 85 gr. slick tricks...The far side shoulder was broken, I can not for the life of me figure out how the deer didn't collapse right away. Why there wasn't hardly any blood to track, only pin point drops.

I used avery means of tracking, had to get on my hands and knees for hours tracking this deer. She weighted 135 dressed, that's the largest white tail doe I have ever shot in Tennessee.

Sorry I don't have a pic, due to having to take her to a processor right away to prevent spoilage.

The deer are remarkably tough

Deadeye Congrat's on th big doe and in being able to find her after being able to get that far with little blood trail. She had a big will to live and get to safe ground.....The 85gr slicktricks have the same cutting dia. so one would think the cut/hole woyld have been latger.. Congrat's again on the deer and tracking job :!:

At 20+ mph she can cover that 350 yards in no time.

That is a LONG way for a double lung shot deer to go though.

The fact the far shoulder was broken suggests that the lung on the far side may only have been nicked, if actually hit. She may well have flinched a bit at the sound of your shot and put your shot off from what otherwise looked at the moment of firing as a perfect "double lung".

Glad you recovered her intact.

Woody: At 20+ mph she can cover that 350 yards in no time.

Raspberry: That is roughly 30 yards a minute. So 350 yards is a 10-20 minute run. Wow ... I glad he found it, I hope I have the skill to do this when called upon. Congratulations.

Congrats on your deer and your derermation in tracking. My doe i killed
last week with 100grain slick also left a skimpy blood trail, it went in dead
center of the rib cage cut a rib, turned up and came out a little high, went through both lungs and was hard to track, but it cut a big hole going in and out. It bled inside. Thinking about using a mechanical next time.

???

Rasberry Patch -
20 mph = 105600 feet per hour or 35200 yards per hour, 586 yards per minute, or about 10 yards per second. 350 yards would be a 35 SECOND run not a 10-20 minute one!

Heck, even I can run faster than that..

Red pegged it. About 35 seconds..

My guess is that you got one lung good and just nicked the other.

Red Label is correct. 1,760 yards in a mile at 20 MPH that equals 35,200 yards per hou. divided by 60 minutes equals 586.666 yards per minute. Divided by 60 seconds equals 9.7777 yards per second. 350 yards divided by 9.7777 yards per second equals 35.7957 seconds to cover the distance of 350 yards. It is not possible given the amount of oxygen carried in the blood stream of an anvearage deer at a mildly active state. Thus, I agreed with Hi 5. You may have not deflated the lung on the far side as indicated by both the distance she ran and the broken shoulder. If she did have both lungs deflated and ran that distance on oxygen in her bloodstream, we need to study her because that level of oxygenation would help lots of folks from deep sea divers to high flyers.

In any event great observation and tracking. I love to track

Tracking is exciting... especially when you know you have a great hit and know at the end of the blod trail is your prize...

Except for "I Love You" the three greatest words in the English lanquage are "THERE HE IS!!"

BTW - The only deer I haven't blood trailed were accidental spine shots.

Having a great hit means not having to track so much.

Guest your comment " Having a great hit means not having to track so much" is innacurate. I have seen a deer hit with bow's and rifles that have went long distances 100-300yards the best example of this was when my buddy nailed a 10 point with a 30-30 at 30 yards tore half of the heart, the deer ran by me I hit it in the liver and tore some of the gut sac. That deer ran 250 yards plus over a fence and 30 yards into a slash feild. Tell me that that deer wasn't hit good. Like I have said I have seen it with the bow not to the 350 yard extreme but they can run with a good hit a long distance.
