Young lad scores his first bear

Post by Species8472 »

My youngest son and I headed back up to the cottage on Friday night so he could try his hand at bear hunting. I went over shot placement on bear with him as the vitals are just different enough from a deer to cause problems if you are not careful.

We set out at 510 am in the canoe and were in place by 6 am for the 620 am start of legal. We hunted the canoe in bait until about 10am and than headed back for a late brunch. Brunch was followed by a nap and than back out at in the canoe at 300 pm. At 520 pm a small boar came in and presented a perfect broadside opportunity. I had previously told my son that in the fall all bears are legal and if he wants it to take it. My son looked at me, nodded and put his eyes back on the scope. Boom and the bear takes off running westward but only made it 6 yards before he piled up - textbook double lung shot from about 35 yards. We waited 15 minutes and tagged a nice young healthy boar - his first ever. Estimated weight is 100lbs - not big but sure made him happy

All loaded in the canoe and about to head back to the cottage:
