Hunting close to the house/back yard
Anyone on here have any experience with hunting in your own back yard. My new place is 66 acres I have no neighbors to my right for 3 miles and my neighbor to the left is separated by about 150 acres. So looking out my back door is all my property, got a good bit of grass separating the back door from the woods. It about 60 yards from back door to woodline.
So my question is this Ive got two really nice large acorn trees on the edge of the woodline, do y'all think setting up a stand that close to the house would be a waste of time and resources. I'm positive they come visit the corn at night, but will they make the trip at some point during early morning and early evening as if I was out on the back edge hunting?
Anyone have any practical experience with this sort of scenario.
Brad.

I have no practical experience. But if they are comfortable coming to the trees, why not? Don't forget, the house and the shed and whatever else. Are just objects in their daily life.

Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
I own 7 acres in town that backs up against a small swamp woody area and I keep a food plot in my back yard for the deer. I watch them out the french doors in my den daily this time of the year and could probably shoot one off my deck if I wanted to. But that said they are as wild as any deer I have ever seen. If I walk out and they see me they are gone in a flash with white tails flagging as they leave. The only time they show themselves when I am out is when I am bush hogging the field and they seem to like to watch.

I have practically the same scenario here on my property and can watch one of my plots and from my back deck. I also have stands on that plot which I have been very successful from. You will absolutely not be wasting your time by setting up stands there but you will need to be extremely mindful of the wind because the deer will already be on heightened alert.
If you look at my avatar that is from the plot I’m referring to and no those are not my shorts. I hope somebody wasn’t in them when that little fella got curious.
Good luck on your new property

Thanks Billy, I'm gonna get straight down to bussiness this weekend. Its getting chilly here in NC so maybe I can get me a couple does out of my back yard.

Yep, actually backyard and front. Live in semi rural area whereas properties are on 5 acre plots. Have a ground blind set up 5 yds from front of house next to a tree. Got my first deer last year. Ready to try for another this year. Like others biggest concern is deer crossing propery line and having to retrieve it from neighbors.

I have a friend who has a feeder 75 yards from his upstairs bedroom window. He deer hunts (actually watches) while watching tv. Last year, he killed a 160"+ deer with his 25-06 while wearing his pj's. Seriously, he rarely ever shoots any deer in his back yard. He and I are in a lease 150 mi from my home and 13 mi from his. He just couldn't resist that deer. Normally, the family just watches them.
I live and normally hunt on my 100 acres behind my house. Going now. M405/XB75

Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
I just shot a buck this year out of a tree stand that's about 50yds in the woods just off of my back yard, you get them where you get them!
My young fishing buddy recently bought a place that you could probably shoot a buck every year from a treestand that's virtually in his back yard, the previous owner did it for years!

Yep! I live in an area that has lots of woods, and no hunting. Deer come into the yards and eat tree branches, flowers, etc. If i could legally setup in my yard, i could get some nice deer!

Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
I'd go for it , I hunt my own back yard with decent success
If guns cause crime, all of mine are defective
Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
Definitly worth it I've only got 15 acres but no neighbors on either side or back for 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. Wife called me last night as I've been 2 hours away from home hunting, to tell me a 10 pointer has been with a doe the last two mornings. About 50 yards behind the house, she also might have mentioned I'm not very bright.
Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
I had 5 bucks in my yard last year 1 was 9 point with at least 22 inch spread ..I let all go and I do not hunt my property at home they are like pets too me and no sport in it I have to have it hard hunting and hunt wild areas etc..
So no I would not shoot a deer there but thats me..

Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
Double lung them and they won’t go far. Three of the deer I got recently were double lunged and the furthest any one got was less than 30 yards.Arrowflinger wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:20 amLike others biggest concern is deer crossing propery line and having to retrieve it from neighbors.

Re: Hunting close to the house/back yard
I do hunt in my yard in an area where houses are sitting on 5 acre lots. On more than one occasion I've have had deer feeding less than 20 yards beyond my target while shooting. Would retrieve arrows and shoot some more and they didn't flinch. I would take 2 steps beyond the target in their direction .... white tails were wavin and they were gone.
The deer know where on my property people go as part of the routine and they become accustomed to it, any deviation and they are gone.
The only real advantage (other than travel time) is that scent is less of a concern. You definitely need to pay attention to the wind if you are in a tree or a blind but they are accustomed to the human scent.
As always, be sure of the shot to best avoid tracking across property lines.
Nothing beats sitting in the woods where there is no road noise and nothing but nature to see. Unfortunately that's hard to come by living in the most densely populated state in the US.
