Thinning the pack
Well, the November part of my deer season this year has been pitiful. I was fortunate to bag an 8pt with my muzzleloader, but I put in a lot of time and he was the only buck that size that I saw. None of the other nice bucks the I had on trail camera through mid-October have appeared on trail camera since then. On November 8th, I got a glimpse into the issue. Around 7am I believe a landowner played about 10 seconds of a coyote howling on an electronic caller about 300 yards from my setup. Well, the woods came alive with coyote howling. It must have been coming from a dozen different locations from just out of vision to over a half mile away. Apparently the woods were full of them.
About 4pm that same day, I made this recording of a similar event although not as many coyotes participated.

Sunday after returning from my annual duck hunting migration, I took the stand hoping the two weeks off would change things. Well, apparently it hasn't. My four trail cameras had plenty of deer, but no nice bucks. What did stand out was plenty of coyotes. Normally I only get a half dozen coyote pics a year. Well, I had about fifteen in two weeks. About 4pm I caught movement well up the hill along the ridge. Coyote! I got a good rest and let the 450 Bushmaster do the talking. I paced it off at 120 steps which was good practice.
I picked up a coyote and predator call yesterday. I'm thinking about dedicating some time to thinning the pack so maybe the deer can start funneling back through my neck of the woods.

Re: Thinning the pack
Trapping season for us starts soon and I plan to set some foot holds to reduce the coyote numbers around me...I figure the traps can hunt for me 24/7 just have to check them daily

I sure love to hunt coyotes ! I've called in 5 since October. I show no mercy on them ! We're over run with them here in Virginia.
