Melanistic deer

Post by xboman »

From the color of the deer you posted, I beleive what you harvested is a melanistic deer.

Extremely rare deer......even rarer than an albino or piebald deer, all the more difficult is the fact you got a buck. Truly amazing.

WELL DONE MAN.

Melanin = a dark brown or black animal or plant pigment

Melanism = an increased amount of black or nearly black pigmentation (as of skin, feathers or hair) of an individual or kind of organism

I am probably wrong but the black on the chest area looks like the dark black mud that is visable in the picture behind the deer??? Kendo Kid maybe you can answer that one?

Any wonder why the ear to ear grin on Kendo Kid? Just look at that buck, definately worth having him mounted to preserve the memory of a successful hunt and a magnificent animal. Congrats!

Sandman,
I would like to thank you especially for your assistance in getting the Chocolate Buck on screen. I appreciate it a great deal. Sorry I didn't reply earlier but I was out hunting this afternoon. I think I have located a nice looking buck. I could not see is rack tonight but he has a great looking body. Now the new test has begun.

Regarding the Chocolate Buck, the dark area on Chocolate's chest is mud and I am not confident he is so dark as to more than a few shades deeper than the usual brown color. Thus his name. He was taken in the Newmarket area after hunting and scouting him every weekend for a year and a half. I had seen him only once for about 3 second and that started the year and a half hunt for him. I hunted alone and excusively for him. I actually went 23 days with out seeing another deer or him. I was hunting deep forest with very tight cover. I took him on Nov. 13 and he was full of fire and roaming hard for a hot doe. I had lightly scented the area with my own mix of scent and finished off with a good couple blasts on a lone golden rod. Only the white fluff remained and acted like a sponge for the scent. He came in fast and locked up at the golden rod, which was also my 30 yard marker and the limit to a shot I will take. He was nearly broadside but slightly quatering toward me. I zip a mechanical (Spitfire) through him taking out both lungs and cutting the main blood vessel to his heart. The arrow must have struck a rib and angled slightly forward as it loged in his far shoulder. He freaking tore out of there covering 168 yards before piling up. I had suffered a great deal for this buck. The commitment in time and exclusive focus may have been a little nuts. Dec and Nov. cold rain or snow and sacrificing weekends in all the months made this a hard earned trophy and he does reside above my firepalce mantel. I totally neglected my house during that time so it took awhile to catch up with chores.

Thank a lot guys for your support and kind words. It makes me feel very much a part of my new virtual hunting gang.

The other photo is from the Prescott Ont. area with the guys I usually hunt with during gun season. It is one of the few area that still allows dogs.

Thanks again.
