Not with a crossbow. With a verticle compound bow yes.

Do you not use spine matched arrows in your crossbow? If so there are basically two ways to find the spine which are a spine tester and shooting bare shafts. Bare shaft shooting is time consuming but is probably the most efficient way to get matched arrows.

With a vertical bow bare shaft paper testing can tell you a lot about your set up like arrow rest alinement, nock height tiller adjustment, and you can play with head weight and shafts depending on what your paper tear tells you.
But on a x bow their is no adjustment for arrow rest, nock point, poundage, center shot or tiller. So as long as I get good groups with my broadheads and I do I have found no reason to paper test but it my be something the excuse the term speed freeks want to do to see how light of arrow they can get away with but I prefer a heavy shaft over speed myself.

I've done it but have gone away from it. As Robert said it is one way to get matching spine arrows. You might want to check out a guy named MasBoy on Crossbow Predators. He has done a lot of that.

That's a lot of messing around with each shaft looking for the week or stiff side. I'd look into a Firenock or Ram spine tester first I believe.

It is a lot of work. Time consuming for certain.

It takes forever to spline check a bare shaft arrow with a crossbow. I made a spline checker using a dial indicator . I is very simple to make it cost me about 15.00 and is very helpful. you can check on youtube for splining arrows.

I bought my dozen Spynall Tapps from Jerry at South Shore Archery. He was a highly recommended arrow and bolt guru, and will measure and mark the spine for you before fletching so it is oriented correctly. Spine matched, grain weight matched, indexed, shafts are not cheap, but he said he guaranteed his work based on the grouping results at a hundred yards. I haven't gotten out that far yet, but short range shots are dead-nuts.

If you're only hunting within a decent range with a crossbow, all this spine testing, indexing, vanes this way or that way, well, you have a lot of time on your hands, now for comp shooting and poking bulls eyes, have at it, get the most you can out of your set up if ya wanna win.....

i use to buy spine matched arrows but dont worry for hunting distances with my quills hitting well .i have an idea and always wondered of a new model Excal that the riser gap only allowed for 2 fletch up and down to pass. would allow for limbs to be closer together and compact. add in a rail that has been skeletonized to save weight with ovals or holes like some other brand rails i see. a 4 lb hunting specific crossbow. Micro Mechanical Extreme  shoots mechanicals only 0-50 yards. 2 fletch

Thanks for the info. Seems like a bit could be gained but in the end for my need it would be a lot of work for something I might not notice shooting while hunting.

You hit the nail on the head your time would be better spent making your own bolts ,squaring them with a arrow squaring tool front and back ,I also square nock and incert on mine, get a good FOC with a heavy head or incert and call it a day.

I’m shooting 20” arrows out of my 380,400,405. That length requires more spine than shorter arrows. I do spine index and see a noticeable difference in accuracy. Of course, the shorter the arrow, the less spine indexing will help, as well as with shorter ranges. At 80-100 yds and a M405 , a 20” Arrow will significantly benefit from spine indexing, and I expect spine matching.
