Indiana OKs Crossbow Buck Early..

Post by Woody Williams »

As some of you all know I have been proposing to the Indiana DNR to classify crossbows as archery equipment, but also I proposed to allow a non-physically challenged crossbower the same opportunity to take an antlered deer in the late archery season. Since crossbows were legalized in Indiana for the late season it has always been antlerless only for crossbowers..

That changed during the administrative rules process this year and allowed a crossbower ot take an antlered deer. The rule was not supposed to take effect until 2005. the DNR just issued a temporary rule covering THIS YEAR. So a non-physically challenged crossbower can take a buck this year.

The struggle is hard, but we are slowly but surely making progress.

The temporary ruling . . .

Crossbow buck

Temporarily modifies 312 IAC 9-3-4, which governs hunting of deer by bow and arrows to allow the taking of a deer of either sex with a crossbow during the late bow season.

Section 1. Notwithstanding 312 IAC 9-3-4(i), a person may use a crossbow to take a deer of either sex during the late bow season from the first Saturday after the firearms season through the first Sunday in January.

Section 2. Section 1 of this document expires January3, 2005.

This administrative rule was approved yesterday afternoon.

That is good news Woody. It sounds like some of the myths are slowly being dispelled. Never ceases to amaze me how deer herds are increasing, with the damage (crops, gardens, and auto collisions for a few) increasing accordingly, but still so many states are so opposed to such an obvious relatively safe solution. Let more archery hunters fill more tags!

Woody: Since I have been dealing with the Game and Fish people this year, so I know how slow and frustrating the process. Congratulations on your success! Striper
