I shot my first buck
I shot my first buck……wish I knew where he was. I setup in the same place as yesterday. He walked out of the brush around 4pm twenty yards to my left and stared at me, turned and headed back to where he came from. Since He knew where I was so I decided to move down the hill to the creek and set up about ten yards off his scrape and I put a few drops of Doe sent on it. Around six I saw him come down the other hill and enter the creek about fifty yards behind me. I listened as he walked up the creek and came up at his scrape just like yesterday. The sent must have worked because his nose was stuck to the ground and he never noticed me. I’m pretty sure it was a real good hit, it should have been. My mind sort of goes goofy at those times. He fell away and into the creek and ran at the other side and stopped at the top of the hill and looked back at me like he was trying to figure what was happening and then he was gone, but he was running very weird. By the time I got back with the flashlight it was pitch black and the coons were everywhere. The terrain is very step and it was to wet and muddy to continue. I pray I find him tomorrow. Do you think the coons will nibble on him? I really hate this part of hunting. I saw this thing on Cabela’s web site that holds several hundred yards of heavy nylon string and it attaches to a regular arrow. I think I can get it to work on my crossbow.

Good Luck on finding your BUCK....Old Kid wrote:Deerslayr, good luck tracking that buck.It sounds like he wasn't going very much farther if he was staggering already.Coyotes and/or wild dogs are the biggest danger to downed game in this area,I've never heard of coons feeding on a fresh kill

Well I went out and looked this morning. I kicked up a buck on the way in, out of the same bedding area. I didn’t get a real long look at him. I’m not sure if it was him or not. He looked taller and his rack seemed bigger and lighter colored. Funny thing is he ran up the creek and over the scrape and through a pile of brush in which he got his antlers stuck in…it was quite a fight LOL! This is the same path I had seen the buck take the last two days. I went back to where I shot him and tried to determine the flight path of my arrow and I did find it. It was covered by a thin spotty layer of blood. It has been raining this morning so I couldn’t really tell how thick it was. I can’t believe that wasn’t a kill shot. I looked as much as I could, this area is heavily covered with giant thorn bushes and those trees with 3-inch thorns, I’m pretty cut up right now. I am trying to find one of those Game Trackers right now! As soon as I get my clothes washed I will be headed back out and see if I can get another look at that buck.
