The Rut has started here.

Post by janesy »

Hour North of Toronto.
Yesterday at 7 am an acquaintance was backing out of her subdivision driveway and a Buck came down the side walk and smashed in the side of her car. They got out just as it was getting up and it took off the way it came.

So yep, their brains are off, the Rut is here

Perfect timing for our smokepole hunt next week!! :)
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Would anybody happen to know if there happens to be the gentleman who makes the vixen master strings? Apologies for posting that here.

Rut might be on north of toronto but it ain't on yet south of toronto. Saw 4 does and 3 bucks grazing in a field yesterday and the bucks paid no mind to the does. Then on my evening sit saw a few does and then just at dark one of the bucks I am after snuck by at 60 yards. Not one scrape yet and only a couple small rubs !

We've seen a considerable change in weather over the past week and a half, so that may be kick starting things for them.

The first buck I watched harass 4 does today was a young 6 with very short tines and he had them running across the field. The second was a big 8 I saw about 3 hours later and he charged full speed towards the doe and her fawn and they took off. It was interesting to watch how the buck was so mesmerized by the scent trail left by the doe and was running with his neck stretched out towards the ground.

Deer were on the move all day because of the bucks being so horned up and searching for the first receptive does.

Another interesting observation was watching the large fawn still getting milk from the doe. Seemed very odd for the size of the animal.

I had a very nice 8 point run a doe by me twice this morning here in NW GA. He was shooter quality but I let him walk and am going to try and get a young (to me) friend on him in the morning if the doe will bring him back in. Looks like we are going to have a slightly early rut this year.
