EYE TO EYE WITH AN EIGHT POINTER!

Post by deerslayr »

After losing my first buck Wednesday  I decide not to go back to that farm until my Game Tracker arrives on Monday. So I went out to the driving range where I got my doe two weeks ago. I saw two does last night but a blinding rain shower let lose before they were in range. So I went back tonight and I had only been there about forty-five minutes, sitting on the ground by my favorite tree when I head something walking across the creek behind me. I tried to see without sticking my head out but I couldn’t see a thing. What ever it was it was getting closer and I was thinking I hope it is a deer and not a coyote or fox. :? I let off the safety and kept an eye on the weeds where I thought it was going to come out. Next thing I know this buck’s head is coming around the tree and we are eye to eye! The first thing I thought is if he gets spooked he is going to gore me in the face! After a second or two he starts to move forward and I am wondering if I have enough room to raise my crossbow of my lap. Well I did and I put the stirrup right next to his side and pulled the trigger and I saw the fletching disappear into him. He jumped and trotted about fifteen feet, turned around and looked at me and stood there until he fell over dead. I even called my wife on the cell phone while he was standing there. I hit him dead in the heart and I learned the difference between a heart hit and just a double lung. When you hit the heart they don’t go far and they bleed like crazy. Also I am absolutely sold on the scent away in fresh earth scent detergent that I use to wash my hunting clothes, because I was up wind to him him a strong breeze and he never knew I was there until he saw my eyes. I couldn’t have asked for a better first buck story. I will post pics as soon as I can get them.
If you can't take a good shot, don't take a shot.

That must have been quite an experience! Not much need for a vari-zone scope at that range
