My 12 year old tags out

Post by Guest »

Yesterday, Monday, was the first time, for my youngster to go Deer hunting. After shooting his single shot .22 into the woodpile all summer, he indicated he was ready. And ready he was!!!!

Two days prior he praticed with a 30-30 Winchester at the gun range, for the first time. At 50 yards, shot a 3 inch group.

I won't tell the complete story, but the little bugger nailed a spring calf at 104 yards, first shot, in the spine, open sights. I can't tell you the proud feeling over this dad, to see my oldest shoot his first deer. I didn't have tears in my eyes, but I did have an over inflated chest. And if that wasn't enough, after finishing off the calf, we started making our way back to the Quad, when we noticed several does and a desent size buck in a spring fed ravine. As soon as I saw horns I told him to shoot. Took two shots, missed completely, but the third one found its mark. At 118 yards he nailed a 8 pointer, double lung shot. The buck ran for 10 yards West, turned around, ran back East and died 15 yards later. Well I tell ya....... my kid grew an extra foot that day, and for the rest of the day, I was known to him as God.

It was beautiful on opening day, conditions were perfect, with 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, except in the fields where some of it was melted, tons and tons of deer, and not a shot to be heard all day.

After buying hunting property and ladening ourselves with dedt, that brief 10 minutes opening morning made it all worth it.

There is no greater reward in life than to have father and son or daughter experience a successful hunt together. The bond that's created is something he'll never forget. Hell.... I even let him drive my 4X4 GMC on our property, one step closer to manhood.

Our home computer is on the fritz, but I'll have him post some pictures when its fixed. For now, I'm going to go have a shower here at work, scramble home to cut and package up the calf. See ya later.

Grey Owl and Little Owl,

Congratulations on your first deer. :D Both of you. Anyone here would be happy to have a day of hunting like that, and to think that was your first outing. Can't wait to see the pics and the smiles.

I see a real team developing here, and there's more to come when the littler ones decide to join in. What a blast that will be. Enjoy.
