.270 win Season opens in the morning

Post by Guest »

Rifle season for bucks only starts tomorrow and runs for 16 days.
The temps have been nice and cool, teens at night and upper 20s during the day. Bucks are on the move, big time. Lots of scrapes.

How far north in ON. do you have to go to be able to hunt deer with a proper deer rifle??
No, I'm not talking about throwing pumpkin balls at city deer!! :P

Carl - first of all, a .270 Win is not a "proper rifle". We call that a "Nancy Boy" gun up here  :D

Now if you were talking .25-06, you would be talking a manly gun, especially in a single shot Ruger.

In answer to your question, you can hunt deer in many WMU's about an hour north of Toronto.

Here (in not so far) Northern Ontario, Renfrew County we can rifle hunt for deer until this Sunday.

Most of us use the famous 30.06 and some even use the necked-up version....35 Whelan.

The little girls in Renfrew county use the necked down versions......270's and 25.06's.

Good luck

Gee Carl, I write it 30/06. Is that cool?
I've been managing to get my 180 gr. with that uncouth spelling for 45 years now.
Can't we all just get along? For God sake man, cut a bit of slack!!!

You guys don't know a "proper deer rifle" You gotta use a flintlock. Hell, any sissy can shoot a deer in the next canyon with a scoped .270 (I used to use those wimp rifles too). It takes a hunter (and balls) to get em with a flintlock

why waste your time hunting deer when you can hunt elk

Is a ballistical fact that a .270 win will kill a deer better than a 30.06.
All of the bullet energy will be dumped into the animal rather than going through hardly espanding and power dispensed in the dirt on the far side of the deer.
a deer shot anywhere with a .270 is a dead deer.

Try firing a .270 through some brush! I have both rifles and the 30.06 is a far better all around deer rifle. For open country I would use my .270 but in any type of brush the 30.06 and/or my 308 get the call!

Just my opinion from up here in the cheap seats.

Why waste time??? I'll grant that hunting elk is as good as it gets _for me_. But no hunt is a waste of time. Being too darn sick to go hunting is a waste of time, just ask me, I spent three years that way.
Now, a .270 will do better on a deer than a 30/06 :?: :?: I've shot a lot of deer with my trusty 06, and they expire on the spot, and quick.
I gotta know, how do you kill a deer deader than dead, and what is the benifit. More tender.
Having said that, a .270 is a fine cartridge, and is great on mid size game, and has done a yoeman's job on elk and moose.
have a good un

Opening day here in Misssouri. Three of us went out this morning, all using black powder 50 and 54 cal. I shoot a Lyman 54 roundball. Long as I do my part I figure it will take any Whitetail around these parts. Best of luck to all of you what ever you use.
