elk hunt in Colorado

Post by striper »

Guys: Back from our elk hunt near Craig, Colorado! Five of us have returned from a really great hunt! Woody, you and I are almost too old to make this trip, but not quite. We hunted from 7,000 feet to 8300 feet; the terrain and large area to be covered required the use of 4-wheelers instead of horses. My guide and the outfitter and I shared a Honda Rubicon 500.
The trails were steep and rough and made for an exciting ride. Saw mule deer by the hundreds, some real tophies, scores of elk, lots of antelopes, eagles, porcupines, ermine and all kind of birds that were new to me.
Accomodations were spartan, but the food was great and the scenery was great for a flatlander. Best of all was the fact that the 5 of us brought home 5 elk; 3 bulls (the largest a 5x5) and 2 cows! We hunted 5 days; arrived on a Thursday and headed home 7 days later.
If anyone is interested in next season, Contact Dan Johnson at 970-326-7575 (cell) or 970-824-7874 (home). This year, it cost $2800 A. plus license and tag. This is a really well run operation, and they make every effort to put you on game. Pictures will follow when I get them back. The terrain was too rough for my digital or video camera, so I took a few snaps with a throw away. Striper

I quit elk hunting back 8 or 9 years ago.

I blew out a knee and only lasted 5 days of a 7 day hunt..

Now that 4 wheeler sounds interesting...

Sounds like you had a great trip.

Looking forward to the pics and the story..
