Turkey box calls
I was watching some turkey hunting videos the other day (can't remember who) and he said he doesn't use chalk on his box calls. Stated that a box call is a friction call and it deafeats the purpose when you put chalk on it. I've always used chalk but it kind of made sense what he was saying. Just wondering if anybody else has heard of this or if anyone does this?

Re: Tukey box calls
Suppliers make quite a few that are considered water proof. they do not require chalk because they have a coating on them. Primos Waterboard, Quaker Boy Hurricane etc

Re: Tukey box calls
I have used old fashioned wood box calls for years mainly quaker boy.
I always chalk them pretty good .sometimes l evacuate the old chaulk with light sandpaper and re chalk them.
I cant get the proper sound without chalk ...the chalk is what creates the friction and prevents the wood from wear ...everybody has a new engineered version of the wheel l guess do what you feel is best.
Wood has always worked for me so l have no reason for any newer versions. I usually hunt from a blind so the call stays dry.

Re: Tukey box calls
There is a nice video on YouTube of a fellow gathering pine tree sap crushing it in a piece of cotton and using that instead of chalk. It was passed down from his family.
here is the link. I think you'll like it.

Interesting video. Might have to try pine rosin. Don't mind trying anything once to see if it works better.

Re: Turkey box calls
I started using violin bow rosin a few years ago on the recommendation of a custom call maker. I can get two or more seasons between applications and it's not affected by damp or raining weather. No more chalk for me.

Re: Turkey box calls
May I ask what form this rosin comes in? Is it a solid block and how do you apply it?
Thanks

Re: Turkey box calls
It's not really a sound thing, it's more about one application being good for two or three years as opposed to chalk which needs regular application. Also, rosin is pretty much impervious to damp and rainy weather.
