Had no intention of rattling this morning. Was sitting on the edge of a corn field with a doe decoy out. This farm (the only one I have permission to hunt) has gone dead dead dead the last 3 weeks. I have only seen one deer in 3 week( he just happened to be the biggest whitetal I have ever laid eyes on). Anyhow, At 9am I thought I might try some rattles accompanied by some grunt work. After a good rattle session I just finished some grunts when I saw a quick brown flash coming out of the long grass that surrounds the field. 1st thought was wow here he comes. Errrr, no, he's awful short for a deer. Much to my absolute shock and amazement, a big coyote took a run at my decoy. He made an initial attack and spun around 10 feet away from it circled out to 40 yards and came in for another quartering attack. This guy meant business.
Now, does this mean my rattling needs work or not? LOL
My rattling needs practice...or does it?

I just had a very similar experience, I've been trying to decipher wether the rut is on here or not? I've seen some scrapes and some HUGE bucks! I will post pics, anyway i had the decoy out and was sitting in a new blind i built on the ground when i hear this rustling in the swamp i grunt a few times and hit my doe bleat can a couple times and all of a sudden this coyote appears and attacks the decoy from behind then two more swarm in, they put my decoy on the ground, and i took one of em out with the exocet at 45 yards, anyway suffice to say no deer that night.
Let's put it this way. He never got a chance to make a 3rd attack . Beauty hide and a real nice size animal. Didn't have my digital camera so he made it to the skinners before I got a photo. The farmer here has asked me to remove any because they have stirred his horses at night and caused them to hit the odd fence. I am wondering if this isn't what shut the deer down or wether it is food source change issue. The layout of this land is such that a few coyote chases would force them off the property so maybe this guy and his pals are at the root of my lack of deer. Maybe not, but I went from seeing a few every couple of times I went out to seeing 1 in 3 weeks. Ah well, fresh air does me good. You should of shot it.
Iamcdneh, that's funny. I wonder how the plastic/foam tasted to them. Sounds similar to my experience in that they came out to bleats and gruunts. Gonna try again tomorow see if I get deer or coyotes. Who knows, if I keep practicing I may find bigfoot coming to a call .
