Early season 9 point

Post by ODH »

I decided to do an old school hunt from the ground due to high wind and the posibility of rain coming and didn't want to be stuck in a tree. I walked in just reading sign along the way. I had never hunted this spot before and I came across a heavy trail heading from heavy cover out to some fields. On the downwind side there was some blowdowns and a tangled brushpile that was a custom blind premade. I sat down and saw a fresh rub off to my right and 2 more out in front of me so the spot was a no brainer. After a half hour or trimming I settled in. Shortly before sunset I caught movement over my right shoulder and saw the buck heading to where I cut a shooting lane. At 21 yds he stopped and was sniffing where I had trimmed. A large tree was blocking his head and shoulder and I didn't want to take a shot that far back on him. Then he took one step back and angled away. I then knew I could take a shot if I held a little high at the back of the ribs and the arrow would angle forward into the lungs. I squeezed the trigger on my 308 short and heard the Zombie Slayer strike solidly and the buck was out of sight in 2 bounds. I found my arrow buried a foot in the ground with good blood on the tail end. Because of the higher lung shot and the buck running so swiftly there was little blood to follow. Luckily I was in a pine thicket and was able to follow scuff marks in the needles. Then the blood started to show better and after coming to a downslope I was able to see a white spot that didn't belong there about 80 yds away. Couldn't be happier with an awesome hunt and a great buck.P1000464.JPG

Excellent!!
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.
